What is Meiosis Anyway?  Meiosis is the process of the division of cells to create two new nuclei, each containing an identical copy of DNA.  During meiosis, the chromosome pairs separate and are distributed to two different cells. The resulting sex cells have only half as many chromosomes as the other cells in the organism.  If you’re a male, your body uses meiosis to create sperm cells. If you’re a female it uses meiosis to create egg cells.

 Here is a diagram of the process of meiosis. By following the arrows, you can see the process step by step. You can see the events that occur during meiosis. If You Still Don’t Understand, Maybe This Can Help

What Are Genes?  A gene is a section of a chromosome. It carries coded information in a sequence of chemicals. When it’s necessary, a part of this information can be decoded and used to provide the recipe for protein combinations within the cell.

Do You Need a Picture to Understand Better? Here is a picture of a chromosome. You can see where the gene is located on the inside and on the side it is magnified for you. As can see, the genes are located inside of DNA.

What Are Chromosomes? Chromosome are structures within a cell which contain the genetic information that is passed on from one generation to the next. In prokaryotes, there is usually a large circular chromosome. Sometimes there can also be several smaller circular chromosomes called plasmids. They drift around in the cytoplasm in a prokaryote cell. In eukaryotes, most chromosomes are located in the cell nucleus and are made up of protein and DNA.

What Role Does a Chromosome Play in Inheritance? You have 46 chromosomes, 23 from your father and 23 from your mother. When an egg cell and a sperm cell combine to make a fertilized egg, their chromosomes combine to make 46 chromosomes.

Here is a Picture of a Chromosome If you look close enough you can see the DNA molecules which contain the genes

What is the Relationship Between Chromosomes and Genes? Chromosomes are made up of many genes joined together like beads on a string. Genes are carried from parents to their offspring on chromosomes.
