Where do we go?  Students use less books  Internet is availabe everywhere  Journals and books in e-form available university-wide  Prints are being scanned and made available online  Library trainings – online  No tradition of studying in the library  What’s the library for? Space? People?

 How to attract more people?  How to prove management we are useful?  What else can/should we do?  What are university needs and what can we do? ...  Should/can we do something else than always?

eBiPol – digital library

eBiPol  Started 2005  Collections:  journals (33 titles, 1750 items)  books (210 titles)  educational materials (100 items)  theses (125 items)  conferences (43 items)  microfiches (600 items)  varia ( 51 items)  Total number of items: 3,000+  Access per year (2010): 626,000

eBiPol  Brings students to e-library  Raises awareness among teachers about library and its services  Creates potential to cooperate in distance learning  Creates visibility of the library in the World (resources seen on europeana.com)

What is WIKAMP?  WIKAMP (Wirtualny Kampus PŁ) is an integrated platform supporting distance learning at the university  Used to:  support traditional courses  prepare and run e-courses  Based on Moodle  16 portals for University departments/units

WIKAMP layers

WIKAMP – Library role  management and administration of WIKAMP homepage  creation of teaching subjects (tracks) for departments (all departments, all levels, all types of studies)  assigning teachers to subjects  receiving and handling reports of platform malfunctions  trainings for students and teachers in the use of platform  running WIKAMP customer centre  providing advice and assistance by telephone,  assist teachers in creating e-learning courses

WIKAMP – “side effects”  system and official address for all students  Implementation of a common authentication system for the several IT systems (LDAP)  Rector’s and Senate regulations governing the principles (rights, duties, benefits) of distance learning

Summary and conclusions  Libraries must look for new tasks and challenges to go along the needs of university  This requires additional resources (people, money), which not always are available  Sometmes it’s worthy to re-structure library to find the additional resources  New tasks create positive image of library as changing and useful institution  New functions effectively stop attempts to reduce library space or staff...
