To increase your marks by identifying areas for improvement and carrying out improvements to your Initial Ideas and Development pages. Homework To update any areas which have post-it notes in the Research section of your project. Photograph or photocopy the page and post-it and update at home. Hand in the additional sheet with improvements. Do not take folders home and do not remove the page with the post-it on. 1

Assessment Criteria for Development Initial Ideas and Development Imaginative and innovative ideas have been developed, demonstrating creativity, flair and originality. Further developments made to take account of ongoing research Imaginative ideas demonstrating a degree of creativity, which are further developed to take account of ongoing research Design ideas show some degree of creativity and further development Ideas show some variation in approach or concept Ideas are lacking in imagination with minimal development or further research 2

Assessment Criteria for Development Social, Moral, Environmental, Sustainability The implications of a wide range of issues including social, moral, environmental and sustainability, are taken into consideration and inform the development of the design proposals Development of design proposals take into account the main aspects relating to a variety of social, moral, environmental and sustainability issues Developments of design solutions are influenced to some extent by factors relating to social, moral, environmental and sustainability issues Some consideration taken of social, moral, environmental and sustainability issue in development of design solutions Development work shows little consideration of social, moral, environmental and sustainability issues 4

Development - Self Assessment Has your development taken account of ongoing research? Have you explained why you have done something and justified what you plan to do next? Have you taken into account social, moral, environmental and sustainability issues? Are you in the process of experimenting with a wide range of modelling techniques? Have you fully justified your choices of materials/processes? 7

Environment 8 Show an understanding of how the environment needs to be taken into consideration when making your product. Consider the following: Do we really need the product? Are the material choices eco-friendly? Recycling? Bioplastics are biodegradable: Is pollution caused during manufacture? Energy consumption during manufacture can contribute to the carbon footprint. Are local habitats damaged as a result of material sourcing? Can transport costs be kept down? Would increased durability minimise impact on the environment?

Sustainability Show an understanding of sustainability and how this could reflect in your product. Consider the following: If sources are renewable it means materials can be easily replaced, reproduced or grown. Oil used to make plastics, is non- renewable. Are the materials you will use from a company that supports sustainable development? The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) – What do they do? Could you rethink your design to use only one materials or less material? 9

Social Discuss the social implications of your design. Consider the following: Have the best interests of the wider public been taken into consideration eg advertising of harmful products? Legally some information should be displayed but other information is at the discretion of the manufacturer. What information should you give the public? Certain colours and number signify good or bad luck in different countries. We have a social responsibility as designers to include all people from different countries, religions, genders etc. 10

Moral Discuss the moral implications of your design ideas. Consider the following: As a designer, you must make a judgement about whether the product could be dangerous or controversial. Age suitability is a consideration. The process of manufacturing should not disadvantage anyone in this country or abroad. These are issues which may not be covered by law but should be considered by the designer/manufacturer. 11
