REFORMS TO VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATION FOR YEAR OLDS Professor Wolf’s Review of Vocational Education for year olds published in March The Department for Education launched consultations from May 2011 and the corresponding reforms from September 2012, following Wolf’s recommendations. Important reforms were approved in December These reforms do not impact 2015 performance tables, so students in 2-year BTEC level 3 courses which started from September 2013 are not affected.
REFORMS TO VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATION FOR YEAR OLDS Three important reforms: Funding Approved in September 2012 Before, funding education was on the basis of ‘qualification passed’ from September 2012 is on the basis of ‘per student’ enrolled. Two new categories of vocational qualifications Approved in December 2013 Applied General qualifications Tech Level qualifications To be taught from September 2014 Performance Tables Approved in December 2013 From 2016, Performance Tables will report Academic, Tech Level and Applied General Qualifications separately
APPLIED GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS: Level 3 qualifications (advanced) which provide a broad study in Construction, Planning and the Built Environment. They fulfil entry requirements to a range of HE courses and need the backing of a minimum of three universities. They do not count towards the new Technical Baccalaureate (Tech Level) measure. TECH LEVELS QUALIFICATIONS: Level 3 qualifications in Construction, Planning and the Built Environment. They are comparable to A Levels. To count as a Tech Level in the performance tables, a qualification requires clear public support from professional bodies, or 5 employers registered with Companies House UK..

This could be the beginning for parity of esteem between academic and vocational qualifications, giving them the recognition that they deserve but what do you think?
