Research Computing at the SSCC

What We Do Provide computing support of Social Science researchers. Focus on statistical computing.

Computing Environment Linux Windows Terminal Services

Runs version of Windows which allows multiple people to log in simultaneously. Users can connect from anywhere. Access through browser. Programs run on the server. Programs running can access user’s local and network drives.

Demonstration

Advantages for Users Can connect from anywhere. Lots of statistical software available. Have power of server resources available.

Cost Savings Advantages Most software licenses are based on concurrent use. Do not have support costs of providing software on individual desktops. Can connect from thin clients. Substantial infrastructure/staff expertise to set up, cheap to expand and scales well.

Funding Model Members: ◦ Funded by sponsoring departments and research institutes. ◦ No fee-for-service charge for individuals. ◦ Representatives meet annually to determine contributions based primarily on usage. Per-Seat Users: ◦ Pay flat per seat annual fee. ◦ Based on service-set.
