Literary Element Analysis 1. Choose and Define 5 of the following literary Elements: setting symbolism point of view flashback character allusion conflict theme

Literary Elements Continued Next, write a quote from the novel that illustrates the element. **Only one quote per chapter (example: if you use chapter 1 for symbolism, you can not use chapter 1 for any other element.)** Then, explain in your own words how the quote represents the definition of the element.

Literary Criticism of Novel 2. Read a literary criticism of The Great Gatsby In 2-3 paragraphs, discuss whether you agree or disagree with the critic, and use specific quotes from the article and the novel to support your opinions and conclusions.

Example Element: Symbolism Definition: Anything that stands for or represents something else. Original Quote “The ‘death car,’ as the newspapers called it, didn’t stop” (Fitzgerald 144). Explanation In The Great Gatsby Jay Gatsby’s car is first referred to as a “splendid car” and is later referred to as a ‘death car’. The presence of Gatsby’s car among a funeral procession in early chapters foreshadows the car’s violent transformation into a weapon of death, and also foreshadows Gatsby’s demise. Gatsby drives a gaudy Rolls Royce. His car is initially admired for its image of glamour. Gatsby’s car is symbolic of wealth, but is later a symbol of death.

Your due date is 2-3 days in the library to do your research include a Works Cited include your textbook for the literary element definitions and your novel for the quotations, and your critical source for the literary criticism.
