Sequencing RATE YOURSELF

Sequencing  Sequence – A continuous or connected series of events.  A sequence of events is a series of connected events that happen in a particular order. Writers use sequence to provide information or tell a story that is clear to the reader, guides the reader toward an important element, or controlled emotional response. SS – time sequence Science – natural events or steps Literature – Understand, hide, reveal, engage emotionally

Events  An event is an action taken by a character to move the story forward in a piece of literary work.  Attention grabbers for literary works sometimes play with sequence for emotional connection.  An event is an action that is taken by a person, animal, thing  Most common sequence is called Chronological Order – An order from beginning to end. Mostly used in literary and informational writing  In literary writings, we call the sequence of events the PLOT.  TRIGGER WORDS: First, next, then, after, finally, etc.

The importance of beginnings  Sets off the entire chain of events in the story  Hooks the reader  Establishes, or hints at, a dramatic situation or tone the story will continue to have throughout.  Introduces at least one important character, person, event  Could introduce the problem as well(or a problem that exists)  Could help give much needed backstory(summary of what happened to his point) 

Dress rehearsal  Writers take certain steps when they write. The steps below are disorganized. If a mystery writer were to write a clear story, she would have to rearrange these steps.
