Reauthorization of the ESEA

 “Together, we must achieve a new goal, that by 2020, the United States will once again lead the world in college completion. We must raise the expectations for our students, for our schools, and for ourselves- this must be a national priority.”  “We know that from the moment students enter a school, the most important factor in their success is not the color of their skin or the income of their parents- it is the teacher standing in the front of the classroom.”  “My Administration’s blueprint for reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act is not only a plan to renovate a flawed law, but also an outline for a re-envisioned federal role in education.” US Department of Education, Office of Planning, Evaluation and Policy Development, ESEA Blueprint for Reform, Washington, NC 2010.

“No Child Left Behind (NCLB) highlighted achievement gaps among low-income students, minorities, students with disabilities, and English language learners, and it required all schools to show whether they were closing the achievement gap.” President Obama felt ‘the law needed a new framework that was fair, flexible and focused on results.’ congress-fix-no-child-left-behind-start-next-schoo

 Reduce barriers to good teaching  Supports states that: raise standards, builds better data systems, evaluates and supports principals and teachers, dramatically transforms lowest- performing schools  Supports development of new and better assessments aligned with high standards

Education has always been a “hot topic” in Presidential debates. In the current debate, here is where each candidate stands~  ROMNEY …”In the first substantive remarks from the Mitt Romney campaign on No Child Left Behind waivers, adviser Phil Handy indicated that the flexibility granted this year to 33 states and the District of Columbia would be in serious jeopardy if the former Massachusetts governor wins the presidency.”  OBAMA …’Jon Shuner said the President would focus on early education and would continue to stress a three-part plan to “professionalize” teaching careers by pushing career ladders, improving teacher-prep programs and creating incentives.’

47 years have passed… U.S. Federal Government is still trying to ensure educational equity for all students
