Although Columbus was not the first European to explore the Americas, he opened the Americas to further exploration. He visited Hispaniola in the Caribbean and brought back eye-opening treasures (including Indians) for the queen of Spain. Following his exploration, large numbers of European explorers came in search of wealth, fame, and land. People participate in parades to honor Columbus. Schools, banks, and government offices are closed.
