Chapter 1 The Nature Of Science Section 1-1 Scientific problem solving Section 1-2 Using Science to explore

Scientific Problem Solving Science –process used to investigate the world and provide some possible answers to scientific questions (how and why). To solve a problem scientists must explore and research. prehistoric times.Technology has always been an aid in science since the prehistoric times. The scientific methodThe primary method to solving –The scientific method

Scientizzle Methodizzle 1) Recognize the Problem –ask a question and make observations. 2) Form a Hypothesis – make a prediction (if; then). 3) Test Hypothesis – design an experiment, observe, and record. 4) Analyze Data – compare results with hypothesis 5) Draw Conclusion –state if results support or do not support the hypothesis

Science Variables Constants – variables that remain the same Independent variable –the changed variable. Dependent variable –factor being observed or measured.

Using Science to Explore Using technology –application of what has been learned through science. ROV’s –Remotely Operated Vehicles gather information on salinity and currents. STAR –Spiral Track Autonomous Robot can climb steep terrain and does not need constant command.

Tools and Measurement 1.Tools for Measuring: a.Graduated cylinder b.Thermometer c.Stopwatch d.Meter-stick e.Balance f.Spring scale

Tools and Measurement 2. Tools for Analyzing: a. Calculators b. Computers c. Microscopes

The International System Of Units Refer to Page 21 of Red book meter - length liter - volume gram - mass Developed in the late 1700s by the French Academy of Sciences, known as SI Units based on number 10

SI Conversions 1.How many centimeters (cm) are in 30 meters? 30 m x 100 cm 1 m 2. How many decimeters (dm) are in 30 meters? 30m x 10 dm 1 m 3. What is the mass in kilograms of a 300 gram fish? 300g x 1 kg 1000 g

Complete the following: 1000 g = _____kg 250 cm = ______m 5000 l = ______ml 7 kl = ______l 800 dm = _____m 20,000 km = ______m 20 m = ______km 800mg = ____g 60 g = _____kg 900cm = ____km 1000 ml = _____l 350 g =_______mg
