EQ 15: How do I participate in Socratic Seminar? 10/15* Read and annotate the Socratic Seminar guidelines and rubric. Write 2 things you will excel in and 2 things you will need to work on or that will be hard for you. Write 1 question you have

Socratic Seminars O Collective inquiry O An exchange of ideas O No “right” answers O NOT a “transmission of information” Goal Goal: An enlarged, shared understanding of ideas, issues or values through DIALOGUE.

Ground Rules Socratic Seminars Ground Rules 1. Refer to the text (video, political cartoons, maps, readings. Etc.) 2. Listen closely. 3. Invite and allow others to speak. Don’t be hostile or dominate conversation 4. Consider all viewpoints and ideas. Disagree respectfully. 5. Ask for clarification. Don’t stay confused. 6. Speak so that all can hear you. 7. Speak without raising hands. 8. Talk to each other, not just to the leader. Make eye contact and refer to each other by name 9. Know that you are responsible for the quality of the seminar.

Process/Procedure O We will have 2 circles (inner and outer.) O The inner circle are the speakers O The inner circle will discuss for 20 minutes. O Then, we will switch and the outer circle will move in to discuss for 20 minutes. O When you are on the outer circle you cannot speak and must fill out a peer/seminar reflection sheet

Grading O A-Contribute to meaningful discussion three times and cite evidence with correct explanation/reasoning (political cartoons, videos, pictures, maps/graphs, readings, etc) at least twice O B-Contribute twice and cite evidence once O C-Contribute 1 and cite evidence OR contribute 3 times but no evidence O D-Contribute once with no evidence
