Before we begin… O Why do we study grammar? O What’s the purpose? Let’s have a brief discussion. Can anyone name or define any parts of speech? 2
“The Grammar Lesson” by Steve Kowit A noun's a thing. A verb's the thing it does. An adjective is what describes the noun. In "The can of beets is filled with purple fuzz" of and with are prepositions. The's an article, a can's a noun, a noun's a thing. A verb's the thing it does. A can can roll - or not. What isn't was or might be, might meaning not yet known. "Our can of beets is filled with purple fuzz" 3
is present tense. While words like our and us are pronouns - i.e. it is moldy, they are icky brown. A noun's a thing; a verb's the thing it does. Is is a helping verb. It helps because filled isn't a full verb. Can's what our owns in "Our can of beets is filled with purple fuzz." See? There's almost nothing to it. Just memorize these rules...or write them down! In the English language... there are eight parts of speech: 1. Nouns 2. Verbs 3. Pronouns 4. Adjectives 5. Adverbs 6. Conjunctions 7. Prepositions 8. Interjections 5 Every word in a sentence has a job to do!
1. Noun: person, place, thing O Person: Ms. Gregorios likes to cook with her garden vegetables. O Place: Escalon is a small town. O Thing: A construction worker requires tools. Summer is awesome! 6
2. Verb: shows action or being O Action: The running back ran right through the other team’s defensive line. O Being: The students were starving during fourth period. 7
3. Pronoun: takes place of a noun Guillermo was studying for his chemistry exam when he realized it was three o’clock in the morning. 8
4. Adjective: describes a noun O The spicy peppers added great flavor to the dish. O The dedicated journalist submitted her article well before the deadline. 9
Article: There are three articles: a, an, & the (Articles are technically adjectives.) O The bicycle was not only red but shiny. O A yellow moon always appears in October. O An excellent student, Armando passed all of his courses. 10
5. Adverb: describes a verb O The little girl skipped happily through the park. O The puppy hungrily ate all of his food. 11
6. Conjunctions: joining words O Michael loved to cook, and so does his wife Michelle. O You will go to school, or you will fail. O I’m happy because I just got my driver’ s license. O Since joining academic decathlon, Maribel made a ton of new friends. 12
7. Prepositions: show position or direction O The cat was on the table. O The dog was under the table. These are some common prepositions: forontoup atunderabovetoward withbetweeninbehind fromuponintooff 13
8. Interjections: expressive words O Wow! You knocked that ball out of the park. O Oh, you really need to take care of yourself. O Huh? What did you say? O Ah, now I understand the problem. 14
