Group 4 – Development of a User’s Manual for Use with an HTML Interface Andrew Slatton Kathryn Dwyer

What are CAPE & eLMS?  CAPE: Courseware Authoring and Packaging Environment –A visual programming language  eLMS: Experimental Learning Management System –A learning platform containing a courseware delivery engine

Goals  To develop a new interface for the construction of eLMS problems  To test this interface and to deploy it for classroom use  To provide adequate documentation to users of this interface

Motivation & Purpose  CAPE has a steep learning curve –This may deter some educators  Make a simple interface –“… a consistent data-driven strategy for designing… problems.” 1  What we’ve learned: –Teachers have hard time learning new language –Need to keep it simple – audio works best –Teachers are willing to learn; they need a push! Our interface will help stimulate more professors’ interest.

Importance of our Project  CAPE provides immediate feedback –How People Learn (VaNTH)  Less grading time for teachers  Less paperwork  Students can ask for help early on!

Where are we?  Outline for Manual –Treeview Style –About 50% done! –Need to be done by next workshop in April  Focus on Captivate Tutorials –One all-encompassing problem  Chop it up – mini-tutorials  Next workshop –Manual/Tutorials ready

Captivate Tutorials  Assessment –How to create each type of problem  Feedback –Attempts; progressive feedback  Data –How to add Data –How to use Data; simple functions  Resources –How to add Resources –How to use them  How? One All-Encompassing Problem!

Future Work  Add tutorials online –So far have done 3 tutorials; need to do more at ISIS, add them to manual –Check them out! us advice if you have any!  Finish work on Manual by next workshop (date still undetermined)  Test with professors –Stacey Klein, Michael Miga
