Math Notebooking Sarah Smith-3 rd grade Jamie Archambault- 2 nd grade

Why notebooking in math? 0 What’s the purpose? 0 Students and teachers can: 0 Persevere in thinking 0 Critique own thinking 0 Allow for mistakes 0 Put visuals to math thinking 0 Show progress in math and language 0 Make goals 0 Increase discourse 0 Question others 0 Differentiate & scaffold learning 0 Clarify thinking 0 And so much more!!!

CCSS Speaking & Listening 0 Comprehension and Collaboration: 0 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly. 0 Come to discussions prepared having read or studied required material; explicitly draw on that preparation and other information known about the topic to explore ideas under discussion. 0 Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., gaining the floor in respectful ways, listening to others with care, speaking one at a time about the topics and texts under discussion). 0 Ask questions to check understanding of information presented, stay on topic, and link their comments to the remarks of others. 0 Explain their own ideas and understanding in light of the discussion. 0 Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas: 0 Report on a topic, speaking clearly at an understandable pace. 0 Create visual displays when appropriate to emphasize or enhance certain facts or details. 0 Speak in complete sentences when appropriate to task and situation in order to provide requested detail or clarification.

3 rd graders notebook in pairs and individually

When and how? 0 Use notebooks any time you wish students to record MATH THINKING; daily, weekly, whenever needed! 0 Math Message (EM) 0 Open Response tasks (EM) 0 Instructional Tasks (I-tasks) 0 Part 1 of lesson 0 Performance Based Tasks (PBT or multiple solution tasks) 0 Math Work Stations (Debbie Diller or Daily 3)

Materials We Like to Use: 0 Grid paper composition notebook (King Soopers, Target, Office Max, etc) 0 Tape 0 Pens!!! 0 Tabs (Sticky notes, ribbon bookmark, Post It tabs) 0 Scissors 0 Colors or collage materials (to decorate )

Resources for Implementation: NCTM Illuminations 0 Everyday Math Assessment Book: Open Response Tasks

Two Key Ideas (Sarah and Jamie live by.) 1. Math Notebooks are a SAFE place to communicate math thinking: NEVER grade or evaluate. Ask students how they would like feedback. 2. ALWAYS model your notebook with students.

2 nd graders are ready to show their thinking !

Building CONFIDENCE!
