PD N ORMS

O BJECTIVES FOR C OURSE Explore ways to integrate literature into the mathematics classroom. Characterize inquiry–based experiences that require math reasoning and communication of that reasoning. Use strategies to help all students deepen and communicate their mathematical reasoning.

W HY INTEGRATE MATH WITH LITERATURE ???? Allows students to reason and make sense of the math. Affords students the opportunity for productive use of discourse when explaining and justifying mathematical thinking. Helps build procedural fluency. Engage students through the use of a variety of tools including concrete materials, drawings, tables and graphs, and mathematical notation to make sense of and represent mathematical ideas. Builds confidence and perseverance in inquiry based activities.

DO NOW “T ELL M E A LL Y OU C AN ” Using a pencil and sheet of paper, use pictures, numbers, and/or words to Tell Me All You Can about the number… a.) …2 b.) …6 c.) …24 d.) …3,628,800

T ABLE T EAM A CTIVITY “Multiplication is the most powerful of the four operations.” Agree? Or Disagree? Turn and talk with your table partners to discuss the above statement. (As a table, write the justification(s) for your answer on a post-it note and place it on the proper side of the chart.)

P OST R EADING R EFLECTION Now that we have read Anno’s Mysterious Multiplying Jar, is there any connection we can make to the numbers we discussed in the Tell Me All You Can activity (2; 6; 24; 3,628,800)?

L ET ’ S W RITE ABOUT IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

R EFLECTIVE M ATH L ITERATURE J OURNAL

N OTEBOOKS I NCLUDE Table of Contents Page Numbers Date/Title Objective/Focus Question, etc. Notes (vocabulary, practice problems, etc.) one page Mathematics Observations (journal response to reflect on lesson taught)

T ABLE T EAM A CTIVITY Follow the directions for the activity at your table.

F INAL WORDS Take 3 minutes to view the literature at your table. Which text(s) would best work for your students? Why? How would you tie that piece of literature into your mathematics lesson? What other texts have you used in your classroom to help strengthen mathematical understanding?

E XIT T ICKET How are you going to implement literature into your daily lesson ?
