What’s the good news? Share something good that happened this week! 2

The Importance of a Degree Before moving on to our main topics for the evening, remember and consider… The Importance of a Degree 3

What is a degree worth? 4 Notice that people with a degree have a much lower unemployment rate than those without a degree!! Source:

Review of Unit 4… Critical Thinking… Important role! Online Research…

Any Questions????? 6

Remember that To-Do List Write it down – take the worry out of it! To-Do lists and Calendars are great methods! Template for To-Do lists at Mindtools Website: Free Desktop To Do List Download: 7

Remember, Academic Tools in all Units… Dropbox Guide Gradebook Guide Library Link Plagiarism Info Many Writing Center Links & Info 8

Remember: Alternatives When Links Not Active 9 If links are not yet working under Academic Tools, remember the alternative methods of accessing these important areas: Writing Center and Math Center: Go to “Academic Support Center” through “My Studies” tab in the toolbar at the top of your home page. Academic Support Center is also available through Quick Links area to the right of your home page. Library: Available through “My Studies” tab in the toolbar at the top of your home page, as well as through Quick Links area to the right of your home page. Career Resources: Available through “University Info” tab in the toolbar at top of home page, and through the Quick Links area to the right of your home page. One more important area: Clubs, Professional Organizations, and Honor Societies = You can find these and the Student Store through “Student Life” link through the “Community Center” tab in the toolbar at the top of your home page.

DQ Grading Based on the Grading Rubric in the Syllabus, this is the breakdown reflected in the Discussion grades: 28/28 = Quality/Content, Clarity including Spelling & References, Professional 12/12 = Participation (responding to at least 2 others’ Discussion answers, posting by Sat., post minimum 3 days, minimum word count) 40/40 10

Be Sure to Proof Your Work… Small Mistakes Add Up Remember these tips for greater success on the discussion board and on your assignments: Be sure to double check your work. Did you answer **all** components of a question…? Use spell, grammar, and punctuation checks. Writing errors cost points! Spell check tools are great, but you also need to proofread your work. 11

What is Due for Unit 5??? Unit Readings incl. Activities and Extra! Extra! Discussion Question Participation –Answer post by Saturday (100+ words for answer) –Post on at least three different days –Respond to at least two others’ answers (substantive responses; at least two to three sentences) Quiz (unlimited during Unit) Exam (only 1 time = timed: 45 minutes) Seminar or Alternate Seminar Assignment No Assignment to the Dropbox this unit!! 12

Discussion First, read over assigned readings. Listen to the audio tutorial… Watch the video tutorial on the best way to do a search in the library. There is also a video transcript to use… Using the Kaplan Online Library’s Business Source Complete article database, locate a full text article (minimum 5 pages). Search for one from: Virtual teams, Workforce motivation, Social media in business, or Professional networking Apply a combination of reading and note taking strategies you read about this week as you read the article and identify at least three key points covered in the article. Note: Your article’s publication type must be an Academic Journal or Periodical. 13

Discussion Then answer the Discussion Question itself (noting the many components): Which reading and note taking strategies did you use as you completed the pre-writing activities? Why did you select these strategies and how well did they work for you? List the title, author(s), source (title of the journal or magazine), publication date and publication type of your article. Summarize three key points addressed in the article. Comment on the value of applying appropriate reading and note taking strategies as you are working on college-level course assignments. What are some of the questions you should ask yourself as you determine which strategies will be most appropriate for a particular assignment? 14

Activities Challenge Strategies to increase reading skills and note taking skills: general/notetaking3.html 15

Extra! Great sites that connect reading and writing and also discuss critical reading: write.htm ing.htm 16

Onward and Upward! Ok. Let’s move on to the other topics for this week based on the Unit 5 readings. Ok. Let’s move on to the other topics for this week based on the Unit 5 readings. Onward and Upward, to Infinity and Beyond! Onward and Upward, to Infinity and Beyond! -Buzz LightYear!! -Buzz LightYear!! 23

Reading There was an interesting old TV commercial that encouraged kids to read. The caption was “Reading is FUNdamental!” That is definitely a true statement. We use reading skills for most things every day. It is also true that reading can be fun. I’ve always loved to read fiction books since I was very young. Anyone remember this one? 24

“The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” - Dr. Seuss, "I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!" EVERY CHILD’s FRIEND SAYS……. 25

Let’s become more effective readers and note takers! Do you know the reasons for reading? We read to gather information. We read for pleasure. We read to survive. 26

Reading With the advent of technology, it is so much easier and quicker to conduct research topics that catch your eye. Just "Google it” is the phrase of the day!! 27

Exploring Reading Strategies Three major factors in successful reading: 1.Motivation 2.Concentration 3.Effective reading strategies 28

Reading What are some ways to increase your reading? Try to find information on topics that interest you. Read articles from magazines, journals, newspapers, and books about them. Because you like the topic, it may help you keep reading about it. For instance, during the election seasons in the past and the one we’re soon entering, reading as much as you can from different sources about the issues and the candidates would be very important. Or read about the career field you are interested in, or that new car you saw you want to buy and want to find out safety features about… 29

Any questions? 30

Word of the Week… (3 points to the lucky winner!) Ground Rules… The first one typing in the definition wins! You can go on a field trip to an online dictionary such as or provide it from knowledge… Ready????????? 31

Ready??? OK… On your mark, get set… 32

GO! 33

Sesquipedalian Anyone know this word? Anyone know this word? 34

From Your Reading… What are some strategies and tips for Reading Comprehension? 35

Highlight what you think is most important. Broaden your background. Create motivation and interest. Strengthen your vocabulary. Have a reading method. MORE… 36

How do I best analyze the information I am reading? Look for bold. Look for the component headings. Read subtitles and picture captions. Get a general sense of the info. Scan it. Connect it with your own background information. 37

Reviewing and Skimming Some material does not require that you read all of it. You will also learn more about this as you go through your program. First, skim an article to look for the salient points. One of the best ways is to highlight those parts of the article you think are most important. As you do this, you will develop a skill of skimming and finding the most important things in an article. What are questions used to look for the main idea of your reading material? 38

Reviewing and Skimming That’s right, the 5Ws! Who, what, when, where, why, and how are the questions to ask yourself as you begin your reading. I encourage you to be sure to read all the reading material for this unit. There are some great tips. Don’t forget to check out the Activities Challenge and the Extra! Extra! Readings, too. Good stuff! 39

Reading Methods Scan, Read, Interpret = SRI 40 COUPON 2 points toward DQ or Main Assignment in Units 1-4! (Not to exceed value of 40 pts.) Expires: Sunday of Unit 5
