Measurement tray weight medium SmallArrows/lines mass

International System of Units used by almost all countries (also called S.I. or the METRIC system) based on the number 10 THE METRIC SYSTEM

Tools of the Lab – Length metric ruler meter stick measuring tape

Length- Definition based on the meter (m) used to find how long, wide, or tall something is

Assemble Your Team LENGTH Practice! Pro: Teammate A Coaches: Teammates B, C, D, and E Use the appropriate tool at your station to record the LENGTH, HEIGHT, and WIDTH (in CENTIMETERS) of the shoebox or tissue box. Lab table Window or wall A B C D E

The Pro- Teammate A makes the measurements The Coaches- Teammates B, C, D, and E should check Teammate A’s work!

Tools of the Lab - Mass electronic balance triple beam balance

Mass- Definition based on the gram (g) measures of the amount of matter in an object

Assemble Your Team MASS Practice! Pro: Teammate B Coaches: Teammates C, D, E and A Use the appropriate tool at your station to record the MASS (in GRAMS) of the objects. Lab table Window or wall A B C D E

Tools of the Lab - Temperature Thermometers!

Temperature- Definition in science, usually based on degrees Celsius ( ⁰C) used to find the amount of heat energy in a substance

Assemble Your Team TEMPERATURE Practice! Pro: Teammate C Coaches: Teammates D, E, A and B Use the appropriate tool at your station to record the TEMPERATURE (in CELSIUS) of the objects. Lab table Window or wall A B C D E

Tools of the Lab - Volume graduated cylinder (liquids, irregular solids) meter stick or ruler (regular rectangular solids)

Volume - Definition measure of how much space an object takes up based on the liter (L) for liquids – mL for regular solids – cm 3

Special Considerations: Volume of Liquids Proper technique for reading the volume of a graduated cylinder: –bend down until the water level is at eye level –look for the meniscus (bubble/curve that forms) –read the bottom of the meniscus

Assemble Your Team VOLUME (liquid) Practice! Pro: Teammate D Coaches: Teammates E, A,B and C Use the appropriate tool at your station to record the liquid VOLUME (in mL) of the substances. Lab table Window or wall A B C D E

Special Considerations – Volume of a Regular Solid When measuring the volume of a regular solid (square/rectangular object), the formula is: –volume = length (l) x width (w) x height (h) Units will always be CUBED, such as cm 3 or m 3. You read it as “cubic meters”.

Assemble Your Team “REGULAR SOLIDS” Practice! Pro: Teammate E Coaches: Teammates A,B, C, and D Use the appropriate tool at your station to record the VOLUME (in cm 3 ) of the regular solids. Lab table Window or wall A B C D E

Special Considerations: Volume of Irregular Solids When measuring the volume of an irregular solid, water displacement must be used. The steps are: –pour an amount of water into the graduated cylinder that will cover the object –measure this amount and label as “initial volume” –drop the irregular solid object into the graduated cylinder –measure the new amount of water in the graduated cylinder and label as “final volume” –the formula to find the volume is: volume = final volume of water – initial volume of water
