Presentation transcript:

Chemical Engineering ARHUM AND KRISTIAN

Sub-diciplines  Petroleum Engineering: Having to do with oil/fuels.  Reservoir Engineering: Figuring out ways to extract oil from a well (reservoir) in the cheapest, cleanest, safest way.  Production Engineering: Focused on equipment and processes used to convert crude oil into usable form.  Process Engineering: Using software to design and control processes used to produce things across different fields of engineering.  Materials Engineering: Creating special materials from raw resources for specified applications.

Subdiciplines  All three of these types of chemical engineering are growing.  Process and materials engineering are required by almost all industries,  while petroleum engineering is responsible for providing fuel for many machines (including cars and such)

Entry Level  Paint Engineer: Develop documented processes for production parts for paint lines and related paint equipment.  Sales Engineer: Plays key role in business, including sales and installation of parts and equipment.  Environmental Engineer: Make sure industry isn’t polluting too much by checking air quality, etc. Work with people to minimize pollution.  Product Engineer: Responsible for design, development, timing, and production of a system or component of a system. Jobs found on

Common Training/Background Requirements  BS in Chemical Engineering  Some amount of years in Chemical/Pharmaceutical industry  Some jobs only require a Technical Degree in some type of Engineering  Familiarity with mechanical processes, equipment, diagrams, etc.  Strong project management skills

Common Training/Background Requirements  Microsoft Excel skills  Certain job require a Master of Science degree in some form of engineering, however, it is more often the case the extra experience is required over a higher level degree  Demonstrated technical problem solving  Communication skills (both verbal and written)

Senior Engineer The highest paying job opportunities the oil and extraction industry.  Petroleum companies such as Royal Dutch Shell and Saudi Aramco pay their chemical engineers very well.  Typically require many years of experience in a related field.  Ex. Chemical engineer job at company x requires only a Bachelor's degree, but 9 years of experience.

How School will Prepare Starting Chemical Engineers for the Job Field  Bachelors degree  A masters in Chemical Engineering will help get a more managerial position  Many employers prefer job experience along with a degree

Technology and Chemical Engineering  With the electric car industry and the want for cleaner fuel sources, in the future, petroleum engineering may not be as sought after.  New, more efficient drills, refineries, cracking furnaces and other equipment are being invented all the time, making processes more clean and cost efficient  Material science innovations have improved the processes used to make biodegradable materials to reduce pollution  Computer software innovations make it easier to design and control production systems  New simulation technology helps predict and discover outcomes of certain processes
