Coordinate Graphs Alignment Lesson

Vocabulary Coordinate plane A system of coordinates formed by the perpendicular intersection of horizontal and vertical number lines. Ordered pair A pair of numbers that shows the position of a point on a graph Origin The point (0,0) on a two-dimensional coordinate grid. X-axis The horizontal axis of two-dimensional coordinate grid. Y-axis The vertical axis of a two-dimensional coordinate grid.

Coordinate Plane X-axis Y-axis Origin Ordered Pair – the star is located at (2,5) When locating an ordered pair, you go over on the x-axis, and then up! Remember: Pretend your nose is the origin, you must go over first because if you go up first, you will be up your nose! UGH!!

What Letter is Formed? Find Day 50, “Coordinate Graph” in your notebook Plot the following ordered pairs as shown on your worksheet: (2,2) (2,4) (2,6) (4,5) (6,6) (6,4) (6,2)

Find Day 50, “Describe the Graph” You will generate 12 coordinate pairs using the numbers You can use number dice, number cards, etc to generate your coordinate pairs. Make sure you do NOT duplicate coordinate pairs. Once you have generated your coordinate pairs, plot the points on the coordinate grid. Next, connect the points from left to right. Once you have connected your points, wait for you teacher to further explain # 3.

Generated coordinate pairs. First, I plotted the points on the coordinate grid Then I connected points from left to right.

My Dog Rough My dog only weighed 3 pounds when he was born so I named him Rough because I thought he would have a rough go at life. Rough’s first couple years matched his name as he only managed to gain a pound during those first 2 years. Rough did much better over the next few years so that by the time he was 5 years old he had doubled his weight from the 2 year mark. The next year we spent a lot of time outside playing and running and he managed to lose a pound. The next year I made sure he ate healthier and Rough managed to gain back that pound he had lost the year before. Eight pounds was the most Rough ever weighed because during his 7th year he began to steadily lose weight and only weighed 6 pounds at his most recent visit to the veterinarian. Notice I didn’t just name the coordinate pairs in my story. It is through the story that the pairs used can be figured out.

Writing a Story to Describe Your Graph Meet in groups of 2-3 students to look at each other’s graphs and brainstorm stories to go with them. Then work independently to describe your graphs. If you need more space to write your story, feel free to use the back of the paper or a blank sheet of paper. If time allows, we will share a few stories at the end of class.
