James(Jim)Bowie, son of Reason and Elve Jones Bowie, was born near Terrapin Creek in Logan County (now Simpson County), Kentucky, about April 10, 1796.As a teenager, James Bowie worked in Louisiana, where he floated lumber to market. Jim Bowie was born in south central Kentucky, relocated with his family to Spanish-held Missouri in 1800, and then moved to central Louisiana the following year.

He was known for his famous "Bowie knife" and a sometimes reckless adventurer, Jim Bowie is now immortalized as one of the true folk heroes in early Texas. In the Texas Revolution, Bowie was a leading participant at the Battle of Concepcion and in the Grass Fight near San Antonio Texas.
He had a great education and he was taught how to speak English, French and Spanish.
