 Germany – Blitzkrieg (Lightning war).  Blitzkrieg was also known as a combined arms operations. A New Type of War

 This strategy combined planes and tanks and moved fast, capturing land or personnel quickly. A New Type of War

 Airplanes  Able to spot enemy strongholds  Could rain bullets and bombs on enemy A New Type of War Junkers 87 – “The Stuka”

 The Messerschmitt 109 was the backbone of the Luftwaffe. A New Type of War

 German bombers were two-engine mediums. A New Type of War Heinkel III Dornier 17

 Hitler invaded Poland in September  Using its new Blitzkrieg strategy, Germany defeated Poland in 20 days. War!

 The coordinated effort between the Luftwaffe and the German Army crushed all opposition.  First, destroyed air force (most caught on ground)  Hit railroads, ammo dumps and troop concentrations. War!

 The German Army used tanks and mobile artillery (armored divisions) to strike through enemy defensive lines.  To reinforce or the retreat was crushed by the Luftwaffe from the air.  Poland’s Army was fifth largest in Europe. War!

 When Germany invaded Poland, Britain and France declared war on the Axis Powers.  They initiated a defensive war. War!

 France mobilized behind Maginot Line  England sent an expeditionary force to take up defensive positions in France.  They set up a naval blockade and ordered increase in production of planes and tanks. War!

 To break the Naval blockade  Germany parachuted airborne infantry into Norway and Denmark and captured them.  Denmark was defeated in 1 day and Norway in 2 months. Germany Takes Europe

 That only left the Netherlands and Belgium, and France free of German occupation. France continued to build up forces behind the Maginot Line. Germany Takes Europe

 Germany went through the Netherlands and Belgium, and then France.  With no air force to stop them, France was defeated in six weeks. Germany Takes Europe

 When France surrendered on June 22, 1940 – only Britain’s RAF stood between Hitler, England and the total conquest of Europe. Germany Takes Europe
