THIRD WAVE CIVILIZATIONS 600 CE

THE QUESTION OF PERIODIZATION ✕ How should we interpret the millennium that stretches from the end of the classical era to the beginning of modern world history? ✕ On the front end : Between 200 C.E. and 850 C.E. many classical states & civilizations were disrupted, declined, or collapsed. ✕ On the back end : Columbus’s transatlantic voyages around 1500 mark a new departure in world history.

PERIODIZATION: Understanding what preceded this “postclassical era” To understand continuity and change over time you must have long view of history; in this case from a world perspective. 1 st wave civilizations 6000 B.C.E. – 600 B.C.E. Identify those areas where the earliest civilizations developed.

COMMON CHARACTERISTICS AMONG 1 ST WAVE CIVILIZATIONS Division between agrarian and pastoral societies Development of social hierarchies (patriarchy) Establishment of early belief systems (polytheistic) Migration and settlement in areas near rivers Early development of trade networks Are these the beginning of continuities or the precursor to inevitable changes?

TRANSITION FROM “1 ST WAVE” RIVER VALLEY CIVILIZATIONS TO THE CLASSICAL PERIOD From a world perspective, what observations can you make about the classical period? What changed between the 1 st wave and classical period? Why? What remained a continuity? Why? 600 B.C.E. – 600 C.E.

COMMON CHARACTERISTICS AMONG CLASSICAL CIVILIZATIONS Patriarchal family structures Agricultural-based economies Complex governments Ex: Monarchy, Democracy, Republic, Bureaucracy Expanding networks of exchange Emergence of several monotheistic religions Empire building Are any of these continuities or evidence of change?

TRANSITION FROM THE CLASSICAL TO THE POST-CLASSICAL ERA From a world perspective, what observations can you make about the post-classical period? What changed between the classical and post-classical period? Why? What remained a continuity? Why?

TRANSITION FROM THE CLASSICAL TO THE POST-CLASSICAL ERA From a world perspective, what observations can you make about the post-classical period? What changed between the classical and post-classical period? Why? What remained a continuity? Why?

COMMON CHARACTERISTICS AMONG POST-CLASSICAL CIVILIZATIONS ✕ The theme is the greater increase in interaction between the world’s regions, cultures, and peoples. + Development of major networks of exchange + Ex: Silk Roads, Trans-Saharan, Indian Ocean Trade + Cosmopolitan regions (zones of interactions) emerged globally in a variety of places creating “mini-globalizations” *** + Emergence of a new monotheistic religion + Expansion of empire building + Spread of disease across regions + Are any of these continuities or evidence of change?

EXAMINING CCOT BY REGION The class will be broken up into 9 groups and assigned a region: Central Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Middle East, Europe, Africa, Americas, Pacific Oceania For each region you will create one slide that includes the following: - Relevant image(s) - Explanation of continuity and change over time *Remember that this includes an explanation of why - Brief timeline of key events - List of significant figures and civilizations from this period
