Setting up your Notebook DateTitlePage # 8/17/15Unit 1: Solving Equations1 8/17/15The Real Number System2 – 3 Starting with the back of your “Math About Me Page” your table of contents will be 3 pages. At the top of every page when you are taking notes be sure to write the date, title and page number. Notebook quizzes will occur on a regular basis. You are responsible for the information in blue.

Setting up your Notebook These standards will be posted on the back wall. Your test will be built from these standards You will know which standards you mastered after each test. Everyone should be shooting for a level 3 on EVERY standard!!! This will be posted online if you want to copy it in on page 1

Each page of your notebook will look like this… Date Page # Title Learning Target: I can… Flashbacks:… Examples:…

8/17/15 Page # The Real Number System Learning Target – I can identify sets of real numbers.

So today’s notes will look like this… August 17, The Real Number System Learning Target: I can identify sets of real numbers.

Flashbacks: Find “x” for the given “y or z” y = 2x + 5z= -3x Y=72. z=-43. y=5 4. z=145. z=26. y=-7

Flashbacks: Find “x” for the given “y or z” y = 2x + 5z= -3x Y=7 x=12. z=-4 x=23. y=5 x=0 4. z=14 x=-45. z=2 x=06. y=-7 x=-6

Defintion: Set: a collection of objects whose contents can clearly be determined. elements: objects in a set. subset: set that has all or part of the elements of the original set.

The Real Number System Handout – SAVE THIS Rational Irrational Integers Whole Natural

The following are the subsets of the set of real numbers (R). Natural Numbers ( N) – the set of counting numbers {1, 2, 3, 4,... }

Whole Numbers ( W) – the set of natural numbers and 0 {0, 1, 2, 3,,...}

Integers ( Z) – set of whole numbers and their opposites The opposite of 6 is -6. The opposite of -27 is 27. {..., -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3,...}

Rational Numbers ( Q) – the set of all numbers which can be expressed as, where a and b are integers. They can be written as a fraction. This set of numbers add fraction and decimals that are either repeating or terminating. are example of rational numbers. is a terminating decimal. is a repeating decimal.

Irrational Numbers ( Ir) – these numbers are neither terminating nor repeating decimals. Irrational numbers can never be written as a fraction. , , and are examples of irrational numbers.
