Lowering Executive Salaries on College Campuses: A Feasibility Study Austin Bentler ENGL: 1800 Dr. Soria

Overview  Introduction  Criteria  Methods  Research Records  Conclusions  Recommendations

Introduction  Studied the need for executive salaries and positions on college campuses.  Researched the feasibility of lowering executive salaries on college campuses.  Examined the main duties of executive management on college campuses:  Preparing and managing the budget  Fundraising  Recommending new policies to the board

Criteria  Would cuts in presidential salaries be beneficial to lowering tuition rates?  Will decreases in executive salaries allow universities to expand academic programs?  Is it possible to remodel campus with executive budget cuts?  Will cuts in presidential salaries affect the way universities are managed?

Criteria  Are presidential salary cuts cost effective as a whole?  Are budget cuts a reasonable decision for executive boards to make?  Would students be okay with executive managers salaries being cut?

Methods  Researched tenured professors and their salaries.  Studied the expectations of tenured professors.  Gathered information surrounding the average presidential salaries at universities.  Sought out information on adjunct faculty’s level of education.

Methods  Researched variations in adjunct faculty’s average salaries.  Compared tuition allocation at several different universities.  Conducted a survey about executive salaries with Hamline students.  Compared breakdowns of grants given to colleges in recent years.  Researched benefits packages of university executives.

Results From The Survey

Average Presidential Salaries  Within the past twenty years, averages have doubled.  Presidential salaries average near $500,000  Large salaries = large talent?  Budgeting allots for benefits packages nearly a quarter of the actual salary  Religiously affiliated presidential salaries being donated

Budget Cuts  Increases in tuition promoting rising executive salaries  Currently adjucnt faculty makes $20,000 to ever $100,000 a tenured professor makes.  Tenured professors make $100,000 to ever $500,000 an executive board member makes  The level of education required varies on averages in every state

Conclusions  Presidential salaries have increased at a rapidly growing rate in the past twenty years  Executive boards deny affiliation with tuition increases  Adjunct faculty are receiving the “left-overs” at Universities  As long as Universities demand larger student bodies, executive salaries remain the same

Reccomendations  More research is recommended  Additional knowledge on behind the scenes presidential duties are needed  Cash flows and university success documents need to compare differences of surrounding schools  As long as student debt continues to increase, tuition rates should be froze  Executive boards need to consider student debt when raising rates
