Presentation transcript:

* TOPIC: Relate/Community Building * EQ: “What should I expect from the AVID class and my AVID peers this year?” * Objective: SWBAT connect their present goals to their AVID class and AVID peers this year. * DO NOW: How can we build a community of understanding within our AVID classroom? * What have we learned this year?

* AVID RECAP  * This year we learned to…. * 1)Create an argumentative essay based on an issue of our choice * 2)Collaborate through tutorials * 3) Participate in community service * 4) Participate in WICOR activities such as socratic seminars, philosophical chairs, and critical reading strategies!

* AVID GOALS for the Spring Semester  * This year we will learn to * 1) Write an explanatory essay on the community service we participated in. * 2) Improve our progress in activities such as a socratic seminar. * 3) Improve our Interview skills. * 4) Practice SAT vocabulary and PSAT skills.

* AVID GOALS for the Spring Semester  * Quickwrite: Write the question below in the questions section of your cornell notes: * What are three goals that you have for AVID in the Spring term on your road towards graduation?

* ICEBREAKER: Name that person * 1) Divide into two teams. * 2) Write five little known facts about themselves on their card. Include all leaders in this game. For example, I have a pet cat, I was born in the Bronx, my favourite food is Enchiladas, my and my favourite colour is blue. * 3) Collect the cards into two team piles. Draw one card from the opposing team pile. * 4) Each team tries to name the person in as few clues as possible. Five points if you get it on the first clue, then 4, 3, 2, 1, 0. The team with the most points wins. (Note: if you select the most obscure facts first, it will increase the level of competition and general head scratching!)

Objective: SWBAT analyze the interests, strengths, and values which correspond with the future careers that they desire as evidenced through their “ALL About Me” evidence graphic organizers. * Topic: All about me! * EQ: “What personal factors, such as interests, strengths, and values, should I consider as I research possible future careers?” * * DO NOW: Four Corners Activity

Objective: SWBAT analyze the interests, strengths, and values which correspond with the future careers that they desire as evidenced through their “ALL About Me” evidence graphic organizers. * Topic: All about me! * EQ: “What personal factors, such as interests, strengths, and values, should I consider as I research possible future careers?” * DO NOW: Quickwrite: * Why is choosing a proper career choice so important in high school? How will this help you in the future?

* DO NOW: 2. Four-Corners * Label each of the four corners of your room with signs for the following: Strongly Agree, Agree, Disagree, and Strongly Disagree. * - Four Statements: * I want to work outside. * I want to work independently, as opposed to working in a group. * I want to work directly with the public. * I want a job where I can be creative. * Bring the class back together and have a short discussion as to why these factors and feelings are important when considering career choice.

* - Independent work: * 1) You should discuss career choice with employed friends and family. They should focus on what aspects of the person’s career they are most satisfied with and what they wish they would have known before entering that career path. * 2) Cornell notes should be taken * 3) You will freewrite their answer to this question.

* -Summary: * Please review your current grades and transcript and write the career that you would like to follow in your future based on the unique characteristics of your personality. * -Write this within the summary section of your cornell notes.

* Action Plan: * Today we will work on the aciton plan of our community service project of a total of 50 points. * This item will be recorded by Ms. Soni * You are required to complete a total of 10 community service hours for AVID that MUST be recorded in your Spirit of Giving Packet. * You must also complete an essay for the project as well. * The essay will be due when we return to class form winter break.

* Action Plan: * Summary: * 1)In the summary section of your cornell notes please write down one way in which you will make sure to organize your time for the community service project. Also, where will you complete your community service? Please be as specific and as detailed as possible.
