Look at the map. What area of the North American continent do you see? Who might have created this map? Why might they have created it? What does the map show?

What areas of the map can you identify? What information would the creator have used to create this map? When do you think this map was created? Why was it created?

What rivers and lakes can you identify? How accurate are the features and dimensions of the map? Why would these territories be drawn across the continent?

How is this map different from a map of today? Make a hypothesis about why maps of today would look so different. What questions does this map raise in your mind?
