Intro Objective: 5 September 2012 Explain the steps of the scientific method. What is the difference between observations and inferences?

 Scientific Method  Solving problems using step-by-step procedures 1. Recognize the Problem 2. Form a Hypothesis 3. Experiment 4. Analyze Data 5. Conclusion

1. Recognize the Problem  Observation  Inference  Question without an answer  Using your senses  Sight  Hearing  Smell  Touch  Taste  Conclusion about an observation

2. Form a Hypothesis  Hypothesis  After researching and using prior knowledge  An educated guess on what you think is going to happen  If….then…

3. Experiment  Independent variable  Dependent variable  Constant  Control  Series of carefully planned steps that test the hypothesis  1 factor being changed  The outcome being measured  Factors that stay the same  An experiment used for comparison

4. Analyze Data  measurements collected during the experiment are charted and graphed for easier interpretation

5. Conclusion  After repeating the experiment many times and analyzing the data a final answer is made

Make Observations Recognize a Problem Form a Hypothesis Analyze Data Experiment Conclusions Do they Support your Hypothesis? No Yes Communicate Results

 The scientific method solves problems using a series of steps. First recognize the problem using observations and inferences. Then form an educated guess called a hypothesis. Perform an experiment and analyze the results. Finally, create a conclusion explaining those results.

Outro Objective 09/4/2012 List the steps of the scientific method. When in your life can you use the scientific method? 11
