Genocide in South Sudan ASHLEY CARNEY MOAAZ ELMASSRY GETTY RONQUILLO

Where is South Sudan? South Sudan is in Eastern Africa. It is bordered by Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Chad.

History of South Sudan  Starting January 9, 2011, over a seven day period, South Sudan voted on whether or not to become and independent state from Sudan.  98.8 percent of voters voted to secede from Sudan.  Sudan’s president respected this and allowed South Sudan to become independent.  Sudan wanted to retain the oil fields along the border between Sudan and South Sudan.  South Sudan became extremely poor, with most citizens living on less than $1 a day.  More than 75% of South Sudan citizens are illiterate.

Oil Fields

Conflict Arises  In 2012 the economies of Sudan and South Sudan were shrinking and there was a major food shortage.  This led to tension between the two states, so the U.S.A., African Union, and China intervened and helped to negotiate a non aggression agreement.  Within a week of the conflict, South Sudan accused Sudan of violating the agreement.  South Sudan then took over a contested oil field which resulted in attacks from Sudan.

Conflict Resolution  April 4, 2012 an agreement was reached between Sudan and South Sudan about the oil fields.  The oil fields are viewed as part of South Sudan; however, South Sudan compensates Sudan for using the oil pipelines that run through Sudan.

Return to Conflict in South Sudan  December 5, 2015 loyalists to President Salva Kiir of the Dinka ethic group and loyalists to former vice president Riek Machar of the Nuer ethnic group started a war with each other.  The national army of South Sudan split and joined different sides of the war.  The war is still ongoing

Civilian Casualties  1.8 million people are currently displaced from their homes.  2.2 million are facing crisis or emergency levels of food insecurity.  Thousands of civilians have been killed.

Food and Water Shortages

Relief Efforts  United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has provided food and shelter for refugees.  Soldiers from South Sudan have attacked the UNMISS shelters and killed the refugees.

UNMISS

Genocide Pledge  As members of an upcoming generation we pledge to do everything in our power to prevent mass killing and genocides, to keep peace around the world, and to make others aware of genocides. We also pledge to not discriminate against anyone based on their ethnicity or religion, and that way we can ensure the peace we intended to keep.
