Saves Lives: How? What is an internal arc? It is a high resistance arc fault within the switchgear enclosure due to insulation failure. What are the effects of an internal arc fault? The fault current passing through the electric arc increases the air temperature inside the faulty compartment. The hot air expands and exerts very high pressure on the compartment walls and doors. If the switchgear is not designed and qualified for an internal arc, the high pressure can rupture the enclosure and endangers the life of persons working near the switchgear.

Saves Lives: How? What happens when there is an arc fault in an Internal Arc Classified switchgear as per IEC 62271-200. Correctly secured door and covers do not open. No fragmentation of the enclosure occurs within the time specified for the test. Arcing doesn’t cause holes in the accessible sides up to a height of 2 m.
