Living/Nonliving - Living or nonliving

Bellringer Quiz! Remember expectations: Cell phones are out of sight until your quiz is turned in. No talking until all quizzes are turned in. Ask Ms. Barlow if you have a question. Do your own work. Find something quiet to do while you wait for everyone to finish their quiz.

Brainstorm: Living or Nonliving? With a partner, decide which of the cards in your envelop are living and which are nonliving. Raise your hand when you think you have the answers correct, and Ms. Barlow will come check.

8 Characteristics of Living Things Living things… Are made up of units called cells. Reproduce. Are based on a universal genetic code. Grow and develop. Obtain and use materials and energy Respond to their environment. Maintain a stable internal environment (homeostasis). Taken as a group, living things change over time.

#1- Living Things Are Made Up Of Units Called Cells. Cells are the building blocks of life. They are organized and can even be specialized, meaning they perform a specific function. The cell is the smallest unit an organism can be to be considered alive. Some organisms are only made of 1 cell (unicellular).

#2- Living Things Reproduce. The ability to produce new individual organisms Can reproduce either asexually from a single parent organism, or sexually from two parent organisms. Both methods have benefits, and both pass on the genetic code. * Viruses are considered non-living, because they do not fit many of these criteria and also depend on a host cell to reproduce.*

#3- Living Things Are Based On A Universal Genetic Code. The molecule DNA provides the genetic information for living organisms to live, grow, and reproduce.

#4- Living Things Grow And Develop. Often means an increase in size and number of cells. The pattern of growth and develop varies depending on the type of organism.

#5- Living Things Obtain And Use Materials And Energy Must take in some sort of materials and energy in order to grow, develop, and reproduce. Provides the nutrients and the fuel for life processes. Metabolism is the process in which organisms builds up or breaks down the materials they take in.

#6- Living Things Respond To Their Environment. Organisms respond to a stimulus (plural- stimuli), which is a signal from the environment. Example: jumping when you hear a loud sound, blinking at a bright light.

#7- Living Things Maintain A Stable Internal Environment (Homeostasis). Homeostasis is the regulation of the organism’s internal environment to maintain a constant, balanced state, even when the external environment is changing. Examples: Temperature, Heart Rate, Blood glucose

#8- Taken As A Group, Living Things Change Over Time. Evolution is change over time. Over many generations, living organisms will change as a group as they adapt to their environment. This occurs due to genes that are passed on.

Living vs. Nonliving Biotic- living Examples- Abiotic- non-living Examples-

Levels of organization of life- we will work from small to large Atom- Smallest unit of matter (Not living) Molecule- Atoms bonded together (Not living)

Organelle- part of a cell with a specific function (Not living) Cell-Smallest unit of life

Tissue- bunch of similar cells performing the same function Organ- tissues working together

Organ system- organs working to perform a certain job Organism- one living thing

Review Try with the cards again. Identify the items as living or nonliving, and explain to your partner why.

Exit Slip Practice identifying as living (biotic) or nonliving (abiotic)
