Sociology Theory of Deviance I think the Differential Association would be John Dillinger’s Sociology theory of deviance. John grew up in a town where all of his friends were involved with mischievous behavior. Although they didn’t commit huge crimes, they did crimes like theft. Being exposed to this kind of behavior rubs off on a kid and he learned their values and techniques. His mom passed away at an early age, leaving him without a good example to follow so what his friends did had more of an effect on him. Once John Dillinger got sent to jail for robbery and assault, he learned the ways of the prisoners. They taught him things and he came out with a plan to rob banks. His motives to rob were taught by the prisoners he was surrounded by. He also formed a gang and the people in his gang promoted the values of theft. Being surrounded by negative people with bad values changed him. John started off as just a robber but the people he was surrounded by influenced him to become worse than that. He became a murderer also, following some of his gang members examples. The differential association theory fits John in many ways due to his exposure to criminals in jail and devious friends.
