ANIMALS WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY Canada and Zimbabwe

IMPACT OF ANIMALS IN THE ARCTIC

ARCTIC FOX From 1920 to 1970, Artic Fox pelts (their skin/fur) were the biggest source of income (money) for the Inuit community. They were very important because these were often the only way they could trade for food and supplies from southern regions. How do the Inuit interact with the Arctic Fox?

BELUGA WHALE Belugas are a tasty treat for many Inuit people. One Beluga whale can feed up to 100 people in communities where there isn’t a lot of food. Did you know? Some people like to eat Beluga meat with soya sauce. How do the Inuit interact with the Beluga Whale?

CARIBOU One of the most important animals to the Inuit was the caribou. Caribou were hunted, mostly in the summer, for their meat and their skins. The Inuit would use Caribou skin to create warm clothing to help them survive the cold. How do the Inuit interact with the Caribou?

MUSK OX Musk ox create wool which is considered among the finest wool in the world, and it’s VERY expensive, selling for $30-$60 per ounce. In the past, the Inuit would migrate with these animals for a source of food and warmth (clothing). How do the Inuit interact with the Musk Ox?

POLAR BEAR Of all the animals the Inuit hunt, Nanuk, the polar bear, is the most prized. Inuit communities eat polar bear meat and use the fur to make warm trousers for men and kamiks (soft boots) for women. Hunting them is very controlled. How do the Inuit interact with the Polar Bear?

PTARMIGAN Ptarmigan are small chicken-like birds which live year round in the arctic lands. Since they live here year round, they are an important source of food for the Inuit people. They are the official bird of Nunavut. How do the Inuit interact with the Ptarmigan?

SEAL Seal meat was a staple winter food, providing nourishment for both the people and their dogs. The fat was made into oil to use in lamps for both light and heat. The skin is used for waterproof clothing. It is also used to make boats and tents. How do the Inuit interact with the Seal?

SNOWY OWL The Snowy Owl is rarely hunted by the Inuit. Some of these owls have been trained to hunt Arctic Hares for the Inuit people. Many Inuit traditional stories speak of the Snowy Owl. How do the Inuit interact with the Snowy Owl?

IMPACT OF ANIMALS IN ZIMBABWE

BABBOON Babboons are sometimes hunted by humans. However, they are not hunted for their meat or their fur. They are hunted for fun because they are challenging game. Babboons will attack humans if they feel in danger. How do people in Zimbabwe interact with Babboons?

ELEPHANT Elephants are rarely hunted for food. However, in the past, when food was scarce (not available), people would hunt and eat them. Now, many elephants are hunted for fun or for their ivory from their tusks. They often have their skin/legs used for furniture. How do people in Zimbabwe interact with Elephant?

HIPPOPOTAMUS In the past, people in Zimbabwe would hunt these animals for a source of food and animal skin. Now, they are rarely hunted except for “sport.” Hippopotamus kills more humans than any other animal per year. They are VERY DANGEROUS! How do people in Zimbabwe interact with Hippopotamus?

IMPALA Today, Impala are still hunted for a source of traditional clothing and meat. Their meat is often dried and made into meat sticks which can be kept for long periods of time. How do people in Zimbabwe interact with Impala?

LEOPARD Leopards are an endangered species. They are protected and therefore, people are discouraged to hunt them. However, because they are so rare, their skin/fur is prized. In the past, they were often used for traditional clothing. How do people in Zimbabwe interact with Leopards?

OSTRICH Ostrich feathers have often been used to decorate traditional clothing and head pieces. Ostrich eggs have been used as a form of food. They are huge! How do people in Zimbabwe interact with Ostrich?

WILDEBEEST Today, Wildebeest are still hunted for a source of traditional clothing and meat. Their meat is often dried and made into meat sticks which can be kept for long periods of time. How do people in Zimbabwe interact with Wildebeest?

ZEBRA Today, Zebra are still hunted for a source of traditional clothing. They are not often hunted for their meats, but they are often a source of tourism, just like the other animals already mentioned. How do people in Zimbabwe interact with Zebras?

HOW DO ANIMALS IMPACT HUMANS? Animals are a source of food, clothing and tourism for humans. In areas where you can farm, they aren’t often the primary source of food. In areas where you cannot farm, they are the primary source of food.

SUSTAINABILITY CLIMATE CHANGE AND POLAR BEARS

WHAT IS SUSTAINABILITY? Sustainability is the act of maintaining the world we live in. We must act responsibly so that future generations will have all the resources necessary to live. Our actions have a deep impact on the environment. This includes plants and animals.

HOW DO OUR ACTIONS AFFECT ANIMALS? ENDANGERED AND EXTINCT SPECIES ENDANGERED AND EXTINCT SPECIES

WHAT IS CLIMATE CHANGE? Climate change is warming of earth’s temperature and its affect on the planets ecosystems.

HOW WILL CLIMATE CHANGE AFFECT THE ARCTIC? Let’s find out: Polar Bears and Climate ChangePolar Bears and Climate Change

OUR ACTIONS AFFECT ANIMALS. BOTH IN COLD AND WARM HABITATS.

YOUR TURN! DRAW A PICTURE SHOWING HOW THE POLAR BEARS HABITAT USE TO BE. THEN, SHOW HOW IT WILL LOOK IN THE FUTURE. WHAT CAN WE DO TO SAVE THEM?
