Ms. Curtis’s Rules and Procedures

3 rules to live by:  Be RESPECTFUL  Be RESPONSIBLE  Be READY

What does it mean to be responsible? Be RESPONSIBLE

What does it mean to be respectful? Be RESPECTFUL

 Show respect toward your teacher, your classmates, and your classroom  Raise your hand before speaking or getting out of your seat  Never talk while I’m talking or while one of your classmates has the floor  Keep your hands to yourself!  Clean up after yourself!

Be RESPONSIBLE  Get to class on time! Students not in their seats when the tardy bell rings will get a tardy. Remember, three tardies = a write-up.  Have all materials needed for class. This includes homework, pencils, paper, and library books. You WILL NOT BE PERMITTED to leave once you enter my classroom.  Bring homework to class EVERY THURSDAY. I assign homework on Monday and there is a task for you to complete every night. If you do not have your homework, you will fill out a responsibility report.  3 Reports = a call home.

What does it mean to be ready? Be READY

 Use the restroom, get water, and go to your locker BEFORE you come to class. You will not be permitted to leave once you enter the classroom.  Get materials sorted and pencils sharpened BEFORE the tardy bell rings.  Be in your seat, QUIETLY working, when the tardy bell rings.

Incentives  1. Praise  2. Parent contact  3. Homework passes  4. Open notes passes  5. Extra points passes

CONSEQUENCES  1 st infraction: verbal warning  2 ND Infraction: meeting after class with writing assignment homework that a parent MUST sign.  3 rd infraction: administrative referral

Learn these classroom procedures quickly and you WILL be successful in this class! Procedures

Let’s start from the top…  Enter the classroom SILENTLY with everything you need for the day (remember, you can’t leave once you’ve entered the room).  SILENTLY, grab your bellwork journal & writer’s notebook.  Take your seat and get started on your bellwork. You are to be silent.  The only reason you should be out of your seat is if you are sharpening your pencil. NOTE: only one student should be at the pencil sharpener at a time.

Bellwork  We will have bellwork every day.  You must label each bellwork with the date.  If you are absent, write the days you were absent and write ABSENT on that date when you return.  You may write multiple bellworks on one page, but they must all be dated appropriately.

YOU’RE FINISHED?  Read your library book.  If you do not have your library book, raise your hand, and I will give you an alternate assignment.  Do not work on any other class’s work in my class.

Being Prepared and Writing Utensils  Being Prepared Bring required materials each day. (YOUR agenda, writers notebook, pen and a pencil  Writing Utensils a. Students may use a pencil or a pen (blue or black ink) b. Blue or black ink should be used for formal writing assignments. c. Typed work MUST be accepted on computer days.

Maintaining Your Notebook and Writers Notebook  Your Notebook a. Keep the following in your notebook: Class rules, class procedures, class notes, vocabulary assignments, and graded assignments. b. All materials must be dated and in the right order. c. Notebooks will be checked randomly during the nine weeks. This grade will count as a test grade.  Writers Notebook a. This will be a composition notebook (Hardback). b. This notebook will be used for private entries as well as class assignments and writing starts.

If you need to get out of your seat…  Raise your hand and ask permission. DO NOT get up and wander around the classroom without asking first  If you need to sharpen your pencil, simply hold your pencil in the air. I will either tell you to go ahead and sharpen or tell you to wait a minute. This is only because I don’t want to talk over the pencil sharpener.  If you need to throw something away, you can put it on or under your desk and throw it away when you leave the classroom at the end of class.

Speaking of seats:  I will assign you a seat.  You will not move seats unless I ask you too.

Homework and Assignments  I give homework EVERY week. I will hand it out on Monday and take it up on Thursday.  I give homework and classwork grades every week.  If you fail to turn in what I ask or turn it in late, I will take points off. I will deduct 20 points for each day an assignment is late.

TURNING IN WORK  Homework is due at the beginning of class. All homework should be placed in the corner of your desk before you begin bellwork. If it is not there, I will assume that you do not have it.  When I collect papers, each student will pass their paper up, and those on the front row will send their papers to the right. Then I will pick them up.

Turning in Assignments  Homework is due on Thursday  I will pick up the homework while you are working on your bellwork. If you do not have it, I will place a student responsibility report on your desk that must be completed and signed.  Remember: 3 reports = a call home.

Assignments with no name  I expect your FIRST and LAST name to be on EVERY paper you turn in.  If your paper is turned in without a name on it, I will place it on the No Name bin until you claim it and turn it in.

I have ZERO tolerance for talking during tests or quizzes. I also have ZERO tolerance for academic dishonesty (i.e. cheating). IF you talk during a test or quiz, I will take your test up and mark it with a 0. I will also call your parents and let them know. Same goes if I suspect you of cheating on a test or quiz. Speaking of tests…

POP QUIZ!

Dismissal  I DISMISS YOU, NOT THE BELL.  I will not dismiss you until all trash is cleared from the floor.  You can drop all trash in the garbage can beside the door as your exit.

Library and Computer lab  We will visit the library every other week on Tuesday.  I am REQUIRING you to check out a book.  The same rules apply in the library that apply in this classroom.  You MUST bring that book to class every day!  We will have a computer lab day once a week on Wednesday.  You are silent in the hallway to and from the lab.  The same rules apply in the computer lab that apply in this classroom. Library Day  When we walk to the library, you should be silent and straight.  There is no need to talk in the hallway.  You will listen to Ms. Linneman.  She will always explain the library process.  There should only be 4 people at a table.  When a table is full, sit somewhere else. Makeup Work  If you miss a day, it is your responsibility to collect your makeup work. I will place it in the makeup work folder in the back of the room.  You are responsible for collecting your notes from a classmate.  I will always give you a reasonable amount of time to make up your work. If you can’t complete it within the given time frame, I will treat it like a late grade and take points off for every day it’s late.

Agenda Policy  IF I allow you to leave the classroom for an errand or a bathroom emergency, you must have your agenda with you. I will absolutely not let you leave this class without YOUR OWN agenda – you may not use another student’s agenda.

THE CLASSROOM LIBRARY IS FOR YOUR USE AND BENEFIT! I HAVE A FEW RULES FOR US TO FOLLOW SO THAT WE CAN ALL ENJOY THE LIBRARY. CLASSROOM LIBRARY

 Only 2 students at the bookshelf at a time.  Leave the library like you found it – put everything back in its place.  If you would like to check out a book, see me. Don’t just take books from the library – that is stealing. Stealing will earn you a write-up.  I will award you a homework pass if you donate appropriate books toward the classroom library.

CLASS DISCUSSIONS  Remember to be respectful.  Raise your hand if you want to share.  I will not accept responses that are just yelled out.  Everything you say must pertain to the discussion.  Maintain an appropriate tone.

Shoulder partners  Your shoulder partner is the student sitting next to you.  Do not decide to talk to someone else as a shoulder partner just because they are your friend.  I will also assign you group members whenever we work in groups.

TURN AND TALK  Desks do not move.  You will speak to the shoulder partner that I assigned you.  I will give you 1-2 minutes to speak.  You should only talk about the assignment at hand.  You are siting right beside each other. There is no need to yell!  Refusing to speak to your assigned shoulder partner is insubordination and grounds for a write up.

Bullying  Bullying is ABSOLUTELY NOT TOLERATED in this classroom.  If I suspect you of bullying, it is an immediate write up.  Again, bullying will not be tolerated in this classroom.

CELL PHONES AND ELECTRONICS  Devices are only allowed when instructed.  Cell phones and other devices should be off and out of sight.  Never pull out your cell phone in class, even if it is just to check the time.  BYOD:  You will be allowed to use your phones for some assignments, but keep them put away until then.

CONSEQUENCES FOR DEVICES  1st time: verbal warning  2nd time: held by principal until end of day  3rd time: held by principal for 5 days  4th time: held by principal for 10 days  5 th time: held by principal for 20 days  THESE ARE RULES PER THE ADMINISTRATION.  When a phone is confiscated by the principal, ONLY parents are allowed to pick them up.
