RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT FOR FUTURE LHC SUPERCONDUCTING MAGNETS POINT SUR LA STATION D’ESSAIS préparé par Jean-Marc Gheller Steering committee –September 4 th 2015

WP2 - Q4 MAGNETS FOR HL-LHC | P 2 Meeting Collaboration, Steering Committee CERN-CEA | 2015  First design: I=18 kA (~100 k€) For classical current leads(2): Lhe = 55 4,2 K Operation with18 kA requires the use of liquefactor installed in the same building (1,900€ / day) Installation of transfer line (80 m) in the building Adapting ends of transfer line  Second design: I=6 kA (~ 20 k€)  For classical current leads (2) : Lhe = 18 4,2 K (ongoing study with HTS)  Use a 1000 l storage tank K (23 mbars ABS): 5 W (5,5 l/h, ) - LN 2 heat exchanger will be used for a pre-cooling down to 100K l Lhe required for 1 test ( + 2 tests keeping cold) with classical current leads

WP2 - Q4 MAGNETS FOR HL-LHC | P 3 Meeting Collaboration, Steering Committee CERN-CEA | 2015 Lhe (4,2 K) Lhe sat (1,9 K) At least 4 h Supply power 6 kA Lhe tank (1000l) Pumping system: 250 m 3 /h (useful) Heater Regulation pressure valve Flow meter indicator Level gauge Magnet measurement G he recovery LN2 exchanger G he recovery Pumping tube EQUIPMENT  support plate with Lhe sat pot  Currents leads  LN 2 heat exchanger  Supply power (MSS include)  Magnet measurement  Temperature sensors, cernox, PT100  Check valves  Lhe tank (1000 l) and Lhe line transfert  Pumping system  Regulation pressure valve  Heater  Flow meter and level gauge T° sensors LN 2

WP2 - Q4 MAGNETS FOR HL-LHC | P 4 Meeting Collaboration, Steering Committee CERN-CEA | 2015 Work planWork time Cost estimation:4 weeks Adapting support plate(study and exterior manufacturing)8 weeks Integration magnet (mounting AdI, supra junctions, internal instrumentation, magnetic measurement): 8 weeks Electrical changes (MSS protection) of supply power4 weeks* Installation and connection (cryogenic, pumping + supply power)2 weeks * Could be in parallel with the other tasks
