Cells

 Here is a picture of a plant cell and an animal cell.  Cells are the smallest units of life.  Some cells can exist on their own, whilst others are found in groups.  Humans are a collection of many billions of cells, all working together.

Where do cells fit in?  Cells make up the structure of all living organisms.

While some cells do look different depending on their functions, all cells have three basic features, or organelles. Organelle means “mini organ”. Organelles perform specific jobs inside of cells. Nucleus Cytoplasm Cell Membrane What is a cell?

Into science activities!  Activities  cells  building blocks of life  Collect all 8 inquiry points!  Activities  cells  cell explorer  Collect all 8 inquiry points!

Function of Organelles in the cell  Nucleus- Controls the functioning of cells, including chemical reactions, how it develops and reproduces.  Cytoplasm-watery/jelly like mixture that contains the other organelles.  Cell Membrane- the ‘skin’ that holds the cell together and controls what comes in and out of the cell.

The Cell - a living factory!

Role Check

OrganelleFunction NucleusControls the functioning of cells, including chemical reactions, how it develops and reproduces CytoplasmWatery/jelly like mixture that contains the other organelles Cell MembraneThe ‘skin’ that holds the cell together and controls what comes in and out of the cell MitochondriaThe powerhouse of the cell where the energy we need is released from the food we eat. VacuoleContains water, wastes or chemicals that are being moved around the cell or stored. RibosomesMicroscopic factories that produce the proteins we use to grow and repair our bodies Endoplasmic Reticulum The part of the cell that helps fold proteins Golgi ApparatusThe organelle responsible for sending the protein to the correct part of the cell or outside the cell VesicleA ball shape organelle that contains enzymes for chemical reactions

More Organelles – cell parts which carry out important functions in animal cells. Golgi apparatus Endoplasmic reticulum Ribosome vacuole mitochondria

Complete worksheet 2!

Plant cells Plant cells also have some extra features that make them different to animal cells. Here is a basic plant cell: Vacuole Ribosome Mitochondria cytoplasm Cell membrane Endoplasmic reticulum Golgi Apparatus nucleus Cell wall Chloroplast vesicle

Function of the organelles only found in plants  Cell wall- The skeleton of the plant.  Chloroplast- Part of the cell where photosynthesis takes place (contain the pigment chlorophyll – a green pigment that give plants their green colour)  Vacuole – animal cells also have vacuoles, but in plant cells they are much larger. In plant cells, they are filled with water and nutrients. They help to keep the plant rigid.

Complete worksheet 3!

As we know, all life is built of cells. The way we look is the result of the types of cell we are made of and the way those cells are organised. For example, if we look at the cells of the plant and animal, it is no surprise that plants and animals look different… Animal From Cell to Organism Plant

Animal, plant or both?

Into Science activity  Activities  Cells  Comparing plant and animal cells  Collect all 7 Inquiry points!

Cellcraft resources/Interactive/online-game-cell-structure-cellcraft- biology/tr11062.tr Complete the activity! Make yourself into a fully functioning cell.

 How can we prove that cells exist if we can’t see them?

Microscopes  Cells are so small that they need to be magnified (made bigger)to be seen  Scientists use microscopes to do this.  Objects that can ONLY be seen through a microscope are said to be microscopic

Into Science activity!  Activity  cells  Introduction to microscopes  Collect all 8 inquiry points  Try to complete worksheet 4 using this activity!

Worksheet Microscopes  Your teacher will show you one of the light microscopes and describe the function of each of the parts  ACTIVITY- Label the parts of a microscope on worksheet 4.
