Oxlip+

What is Oxlip+? A tool for finding and connecting to databases – Facilitates connection to databases from on & off campus – Allows you to find useful databases for your subject Allows you to search within some databases by entering keywords (“CrossSearch”) – Can search up to 5 databases simultaneously – Not available for all databases – The databases own search interfaces usually offer more sophisticated search options and better functionality than “cross search”

OXLIP+: LOGGING IN For full functionality you must log in to Oxlip+ (especially important if you are off campus)

Logging in For full functionality “Log in” Gives you full “password free” access even if you are off campus Allows you to save your favourite databases

Choose University of Oxford from the drop down menu – its under U! Logging in Choose University of Oxford from the list of institutions

OXLIP+ : FINDING DATABASES Finding databases by title and keywords and browsing by subject

Find Databases “Find Database” options Find by title (by entering the database name or browsing the A-Z) Find databases by entering keywords, database name, publisher... Browse by subject

Find databases : by name e.g. Finding Westlaw

Finding databases: results Connect to database. Information about the database Add to quick sets – adds the databases to your favourites under “My Research”.

Yellow flag – indicates that you may be prompted to log on with your Oxford single sign on (even if you have already logged on to Oxlip+) Browsing results

Key - Database requires a password (other than your OSS). Follow the instructions for getting passwords in the legend. Green arrow - Database requires “thin client software”. Follow the link to load the software. NOTE – you will only need to do this once. Browsing results

The legend…. Log in to Oxlip+ to connect to this database. You will only see this icon when you are off campus

Find database: by keywords or other options Pick subject Enter keywords Pick resource type (e.g. Full text, journal, web site etc) Searches the description, title and keywords in the “information” panel for each database Does not search the contents of the database Use it to find a databases suitable for your subject, not to conduct a literature search.

OXLIP+: CROSS SEARCH Allows you to search databases by keyword from within Oxlip+ Only available for some databases (with the magnifying glass) More sophisticated search options are often available using the databases’ own search interfaces

CrossSearch: Opening screen “Cross Search” opening screen shows new titles across all subjects on Oxlip+. Choose your own subject from the subjects drop down menu and then choose an appropriate sub category

Step 1: Choose a subject & sub category 1. Choose your subject 2. Choose appropriate sub category (if available). Note: if you do not choose a sub category Oxlip+ will display the first category in the list (which will not necessarily be ALL)

Step 2: Choose databases to search Only databases with a check box may be cross searched If you are going to search the same set of databases regularly create a “QuickSet”. Use + to add databases and then use “My Research” to group them into a quickset

Step 3: enter your search terms Choose a search field

Step 4: wait for your results…

Cross Search Results: Table view Sort options (A-Z by author/title, year…) Refine options. Narrow down your results by seeing only those from a particular topic, date, author, subject… Note – this does not initiate a new search, it just selects from within your results Clicking on the title takes you to more information (full bibliographic record including publication information and abstract where available) Check for full text Add to your “eshelf” within Oxlip+ (requires you to log in)

My Research – personal storage area “My Research” eShelf – items added to basket from CrossSearch My Databases – favourite databases added from “Find Databases”

My Research: e-Shelf Delete / Save All items added to basket in alphabetical items (not just items added this session) Advanced – allows you to set up folders for your e-shelf results

My Research : My databases My databases – Allows you to organise your favourite databases into “Quicksets” which can then be searched using “Cross Search” (if the databases are cross searchable) Create a new “Quickset” Use arrows to add databases to each quickset that you create
