Oil Filters, Low Oil Indicators, and Crankcase Ventilation

Oil Filters Oil filters are used to filter out particles in the oil that could other wise result in damage to internal parts of an engine. The filter element is composed of a paper element that is pleated(folded)

Types of Oil Filters There are typically two types – self contained filter- typically what most vehicles/equipment have, has a metal case. – paper cartridge filter- a lot of older cars as well as some small engines such as ATVs and dirt bikes, has a changeable cartridge, you would take a cover off and remove the paper element.

Low Oil Indicators Most engines typically use a system designed to protect an engine in the event that the oil level drops below a inadequate level. – Results can be mechanical damage to the engine.

Low Oil Indicators These systems usually use a magnetic switch to indicate the oil level. When oil is sufficient the switch is open. When it is low the magnet pulls shut – creating contact and allowing electricity to flow that results in the engine turning off.

Crankcase Ventilation In order for all engines to function properly they must have some sort of crankcase ventilation present. Crankcase breather: is a valve that allows for the escape of pressure that accumulates in the oil pan and valve cover as a result of the piston travelling up and down.

Crankcase Ventilation The pressure is a result of oil mist and gasoline vapors. – older engines often vented this directly into the atmosphere. – modern engines it is re-circulated back to the intake manifold and is burned. If this pressure is not released it can cause seals to leak due to oil being forced out as pressure is leaving the motor.

Crankcase Ventilation The most common crankcase vent in small engines is a fibrous material that acts as a reed valve allowing gases to escape.
