Main Idea: Economic decisions always involve trade-offs that have costs Trade-off: sacrificing one good or service to purchase or produce another  Example: if you choose to buy an iPod, you are exchanging your income for the right to own the iPod. The Cost of Trade-Offs Opportunity Cost: the value of the next best alternative given up for the alternative that was chosen View: What’s the Difference Between a Trade-Off and an Opportunity Cost?What’s the Difference Between a Trade-Off and an Opportunity Cost?

At the National Level $825 Stimulus Package First decision: Spending vs. Tax Cuts  (Current proposal is 60% spending vs. 40% tax cuts)  Argument: spending helps short term while tax cuts could help long term On spending side, how to spend…? Production Possibilities Curve A production possibilities curve shows the maximum combinations of goods and services that can be produced with a given amount of resources. Can help determine how much of each item to produce, thus revealing the trade-offs and opportunity costs involved in each decision.
