JOHN 20:1-23

JOHN 20:24 “BUT THOMAS, ONE OF THE TWELVE, CALLED DIDYMUS, WAS NOT WITH THEM WHEN JESUS CAME” BOTH THOMAS (ARAMIC) AND DIDYMUS (GREEK) MEAN TWIN – HE COULD HAVE BEEN A TWIN – IT COULD ALSO SPEAK OF OUR TWO NATURES FAITH AND DOUBT

THOMAS THE POUTER MARY MAGDALENE SAW HIM AND TALKED TO HIM----WHY NOT ME? WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO ME NOW? THE OTHER TEN SAW HIM AND HE SPOKE PEACE TO THEM AND BREATHED ON THEM AND GAVE THEM AUTHORITY---WHY NOT ME? POOR ME, IT’S JUST NOT FAIR!

THOMAS THE DOUBTER

THOMAS THE SHOUTER

THE ROAD TO BEING A

THOMAS IS A CASE STUDY OF ALL OF THE DISCIPLES AND US TODAY: – WHEN WE ARE FACED WITH WHAT WE DON’T UNDERSTAND – WHEN WE FEEL LEFT OUT – WHEN WE ARE FEARFUL, DISSAPOINTED – WHEN NEED TO SEE BEFORE WE BELIEVE – WHEN OUR WORLD IS UPSIDE DOWN – WE OFTEN: POUT AND DOUBT BEFORE WE CAN SHOUT

THOMAS DESPARATELY NEEDED TO UNDERSTAND THE REALITY OF CHRIST’S RESURRECTION FOR HIMSELF-HE DIDN’T KNOW WHAT TO DO NEXT THERE HAD BEEN 3 PREVIOUS N.T. RESURRECTIONS (WIDOW’S SON AT NAIN, JARIUS’ DAUGHTER AND LAZARUS)—NONE OF THEM COULD RAISE THEMSELVES BUT JESUS DID: THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE, ISN’T IT?

WITHOUT BELIEF IN THE RESURRECTION, THERE IS NO…. VICTORY OVER SIN AND DEATH SALVATION HOPE CHRISTIANITY

JESUS WANTED THOMAS TO KNOW LIFE IS POSSIBLE EVEN WHEN THINGS ARE DEAD AND IN CHAOS JESUS HAS RESURRECTION POWER IN HIM WHEN WE RIP THE IM FROM IMPOSSIBLE, WE GET POSSIBLE (ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE TO THEM WHO BELIEVE IN HIS RESURRECTION POWER) VS. THEIR OWN POWER

JESUS DIDN’T WANT THOMAS TO CONTINUE TO POUT OR DOUBT BECAUSE IT CAUSES POUTING (SELF CENTERED) CAUSES DOUBTING JESUS DOES NOT WANT YOU AND ME TO STAY IN DOUBT BECAUSE IT CAUSES DESPERATION JESUS IS READY AND WILLING TO GIVE US REVELATION IN THE MIDST OF OUR DESPERATION SO YOU WILL HAVE RESTORATION AND NEW DETERMINATION

WHEN JESUS WAS CRUCIFIED THOMAS AND THE OTHER 10 LOST THEIR DETERMINATION (RESOLVE)(FAITH)

HERE ARE SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT ALL OF THE DISCIPLES THEY ALL BEGAN TO POUT AND DOUBT THEY HAD FEAR OF THEIR LIVES BEING IN DANGER: (I THINKS THEIR LACK OF COURAGE EVEN SURPISED THEMSELVES) THEY DIDN’T KNOW IF THEY SHOULD STAY OR GO THEY WERE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES – WE TEND TO THINK MORE HIGHLY OF OURSELVES THAN WE SHOULD

EXAMPLE: THE BEATING ON THE METRO LINK

JESUS WANTED TO RESTORE THOMAS’ & THE OTHERS DETERMINATION TO:

WHEN YOU POUT AND DOUBT JESUS WILL NOT REJECT YOU JESUS WILL COME TO YOU TO REMOVE YOUR POUT AND DOUBT IF YOU BELIEVE IN HIS RESURRECTION POWER, HE WILL CHANGE YOU INTO A “SHOUTER” ---”LORD AND SAVIOR” THOMAS AND THE OTHERS NEVER LET GO OF THIS REVELATION—IT BECAME THEIR PASSION

TODAY, JESUS WILL HELP YOU MOVE: FROM A POUTER: WHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO ME AND A DOUBTER: I DOUBT GOD WILL EVER DO IT FOR ME BUT I’LL BELIEVE IT WHEN HE DOES TO A SHOUTER: JESUS YOUR ARE MY LORD AND SAVIOR: “I NOW BELIEVE THEREFORE I SEE”
