Literacy Activities Writing to advise

The Kidney Urban myth…. One night a student went to a party. She had only been at college for a few days so didn’t know anyone there. Someone at the party gave her a drink, but she soon felt faint and passed out. When she woke up she was in a bath full of ice in a strange hotel. Realising that something was seriously wrong she looked down and saw a huge scar on her side. She began to scream. The noise attracted attention. Eventually an ambulance came. The medics said that this was not the first time that this had happened, and it was likely that she had been drugged and her kidney removed to be sold illegally on the black market.

The Kidney Heist (15)

Advise me… Create a 10-point checklist for teenagers advising them on staying safe at Christmas Decide where this checklist could be displayed or who it could be handed out by – can it be part of a real school health campaign?

Literacy Activities How to make your writing more interesting

This was written by a year 8 student whose teacher said it wasn’t very interesting. Do you agree? Last summer we didn’t go on holiday and we stayed at home which I didn’t mind too much because I have loads of friends at home and we spent a lot of time doing stuff which was pretty interesting to I didn’t mind that we didn’t have a proper holiday but my mum said she wished we had gone away somewhere.

Imagine you are giving the student a yellow sticker What would you say the WWW is in this text? What would you give as an EBI? Choose 3 targets. Demonstrate to the student how he could improve his writing by writing a better version in your books. Write down the 2 main things you have done to improve his writing.

Literacy Activities How do we read? Investigating reading skills

What kind of text is this? How can you tell? What is it about? A ___ ____ __ a ___ ___ ____ by a ____ ____ ____ ___ and ____ _____ that ____ ___ ___ and ___ ___. ___ ___ ___ when ___ ____ from the ___ is ____ as the ___ ___ ___, ____ in ___ of ___ ___ ___ in the ___ ___. They are ____ by a ____ ____ ____ than ___ ___ ____ such as ____. ___ ___, and ____ _____.

What do you think? The text is a fiction text The text is factual The text is personal The text is designed to entertain The text is designed to inform Choose from: DT (definitely true) PT (probably true) PU (probably untrue) DU (definitely untrue )

Why so hard? What kind of words were missing from the text? What kind of words were in the text? How did you make decisions about the kind of text it is?

Were you right? A topical cyclone is a storm system characterized by a large low-pressure centre and numerous thunderstorms that produce strong winds and heavy rain. Tropical cyclones strengthen when water evaporated fro the ocean is released as the saturated air rises, resulting in condensation of water vapour contained in the moist air. They are fuelled by a different heat mechanism than other cyclonic windstorms such as nor’easters, European windstorms, and polar lows.
