Review of Conservation of Mass and Balancing 10/19/2015

Warm Up  Welcome Back!!  Login to OneNote  Balance this Equation: ____ CoBr 3 + ____ CaSO 4  ____ CaBr 2 + ____ Co 2 (SO 4 ) 3 Try this one if you are finished with the first one: ____FeCl 3 + _____MgO ---> _____Fe 2 O 3 + _____MgCl 2

Schedule  Warm Up – One Note  Conservation of Mass and Balancing Review  Demonstration  Introduction to Conservation of Mass Lab  Work Time for writing introduction and hypothesis  Pass out Study Guide  Homework:  Introduction and Hypothesis for Lab Due- 10/20/2015  Study Guide Due 10/28/2015

Tricks for Balancing  1. Balance polyatomic ions as a whole. Eg: SO 4 should be balanced instead of balancing Sulfur and Oxygen separately.  2. Balance the element, other than hydrogen and oxygen, that has the greatest number of atoms in any reactant or product.  3. Balance other elements, other than hydrogen and oxygen.  4. Balance oxygen or hydrogen, whichever one is present in the combined state. Leave until last whichever one is present in the uncombined state.  5. Check that the equation is balanced by counting the number of atoms of each element on each side of the equation.  6. The coefficients should be in their lowest terms. For example, the balanced equation for the reaction between hydrogen and oxygen is:  2H2 + O2 ---> 2H20 NOT 4H2 + 2O2 ---> 4H2O

Let’s try some with a partner  Eg: Write a balanced chemical equation for the following reactions.  1. _____NaCl + _____BeF 2 → _____NaF + _____BeCl 2  2. _____FeCl 3 + _____Be 3 (PO 4 ) 2 → _____BeCl 2 + _____FePO 4  3. _____AgNO 3 + _____LiOH → _____AgOH + _____LiNO 3  4. _____CH 4 + _____O 2 → _____CO 2 + _____H 2 O  5. _____Mg + _____Mn 2 O 3 → _____MgO + _____Mn  After Balancing each equation, then count the atoms and add up the masses!

Demonstration  Did a chemical reaction occur?  How do you know?  How does this experiment show conservation of mass?

Conservation of Mass Lab  Read through the Conservation of Mass Lab Packet Introduction  What kind of lab safety should we consider?  What should we include in our introduction?

Lab Write-up Introductions  What do you think we should include in our write-up?

Percent Error  % error = theoretical value – experimental value Theoretical Value x100
