PRACTICE TEACHING 2008/2009

EDUC # Observation & Practice Teaching Course = 2 hours class instruction and Practice Teaching weeks This course is a requirement for each year of the Concurrent Education program

Students must pass the courses in order to: Receive BEd Degree (fifth year) Be recommended to the Ontario College of Teachers (fifth year) Please Note: Practice Teaching in fifth year is not repeatable Observation and Practice Teaching is PASS OR FAIL

1.Introduce themselves to student teachers before their teaching blocks (e.g. , in person, telephone). Responsibilities of Faculty Advisor in Practice Teaching 2.Consult with associate teachers. 3.Examine plans, observation notes and reflections normally prior to the lesson. 4.Observe teaching and provide feedback. 5.Complete evaluation reports during the school year for student teachers. 6.Provide additional debriefing following the practice teaching session.

Role of Faculty Advisor on Evaluation Day 1.Report to the school office. 2.If time permits meet with the student teacher and associate prior to the lesson. 3.Review student teacher’s binder (ensuring that all lesson plans, reflections, etc. are in order). 4.Meet with the student teacher for a post- teaching conference and with the associate teacher if time permits. 5.Provide a clear indication of success or lack of success.

Why Have A Faculty Advisor A faculty advisor provides valuable insight into your growth and development as a teacher. Faculty advisors share their knowledge and expertise. Faculty advisors include Nipissing Faculty of Education professors, retired teachers, principals and superintendents.

Preparing for Your Faculty Advisor’s Visit Confirm the day and time your faculty advisor plans to visit. ( if already established) Make sure your associate teacher is aware of the visit. Make sure you have kept your practice teaching binder up to date. Prepare a great lesson! RELAX!!!

Your Questions Answered? Q: When will I know who my faculty advisor will be? A: Information regarding your Faculty Advisor will be sent prior to your placement. Q: Will I be able to contact my Faculty Advisor? A: Contact information will be provided once Faculty Advisors have been confirmed.

Q: Will I always know when my faculty advisor is going to visit me? A: In the majority cases the advisor will notify you prior to the visit. However, advisors also have the option of visiting without prior notice. Questions Continued

Q: Can I change to a different faculty advisor? A: A change in faculty advisor is not possible.

Q: What do I do with my evaluations from both my associate teachers and faculty advisors? A: By end of your fifth year you could have 18 or more evaluations. Please keep your evaluations in a safe place as you will want to make copies of some to include in your resume package. Questions Continued
