Half Reaction Method Steps: Write the formula equation Assign oxidation numbers to all substances in the equation Write the oxidation half reaction Balance the mass using H 2 O, H+ or OH- Balance the charge using electrons Write the reduction half reaction Balance the mass using H 2 O, H+ or OH- Balance the charge using electrons

Half Reaction Method Continued Adjust coefficients so that the same number of electrons are in half reactions Remember, you can only MULTIPLY! Add half reactions and cancel out anything occurring on both sides Be careful! Combine ions to form compounds An example: Sample problem 19-1

Sample Problem 19-1 A dark purple solution of potassium permanganate is titrated into a colorless solution of iron (II) sulfate and sulfuric acid. The products are iron (III) sulfate, manganese (II) sulfate, potassium sulfate and water. Write a balanced equation for this reaction.
