Paul Alexander1 DS3 Deliverable Status 4 th SKADS Workshop, Lisbon, 2-3 October 2008 DS3 Deliverables Review

Paul Alexander2 DS3 Deliverable Status 4 th SKADS Workshop, Lisbon, 2-3 October 2008 DS3-T1: Data and Phase transfer Report on COTS technology: Done, not published Report on component based technology 90% complete – some more work on VCSELS Prototype phase transfer link 100% complete Report on performance of phase transfer link Done Report on prototype data links over short and long distances Work complete – report needs to merge info from Manchester group and BEST Detailed cost model 70% done, need to complete implementation into SKACost

Paul Alexander3 DS3 Deliverable Status 4 th SKADS Workshop, Lisbon, 2-3 October 2008 DS3-T2: Data handling control & computing Processing architectural design –On going; will input experience from LOFAR. Also merge relevant experience from DS2 and DS4 Software design –This has not been started; this will be input from LOFAR experience into SKA context. Input from DS3-T5 Cost and power usage evaluations – Significant overlap with DS4 – merge info into report Cost evaluations for software architecture –Not started: Cambridge will lead; input from LOFAR Technology assessment and road mapping –Good state ; lots of relevant work, needs bringing together

Paul Alexander4 DS3 Deliverable Status 4 th SKADS Workshop, Lisbon, 2-3 October 2008 DS3-T3: Functional simulator Initial report on conceptual issues of SKA network Done D&C I Delivery of functional simulator Done – see this meeting Report on performance D&C I and II have lots of relevant material; 70% done Work will be completed as part of the work of the Systems group

Paul Alexander5 DS3 Deliverable Status 4 th SKADS Workshop, Lisbon, 2-3 October 2008 DS3-T4: Siting issues First overview report on site selection procedures Delivered – report is private Report on site selection Delivered – report is private Final report including discussion of site, land purchase etc. Will send a 1-page report explaining how work has been superseded by external events RF workshop on spectrum and other site related issues This will be formally met by linking to other planned workshops

Paul Alexander6 DS3 Deliverable Status 4 th SKADS Workshop, Lisbon, 2-3 October 2008 Original aims –Ease of use of the SKA: observing modes, astronomer interaction –Data archives for the SKA: what is provided to the end user; data volumes etc. –Visualisation tools: for end user astronomers and “telescope operators”; what is available, can the tools cope, do we need a development programme? –What software tools are required for the end user; how are these distributed where is analysis done? Tools for science extraction? Plan for two meetings (combining original 4) First meeting done Will setup discussion on open-access WIKI Second in March 2009 in conjunction with Oxford MCCT workshop DS3-T5: SKA for the User

Paul Alexander7 DS3 Deliverable Status 4 th SKADS Workshop, Lisbon, 2-3 October 2008 DS3-T6: Scalable design and implementation Report on prototype control and data processing system Significant overlap with DS3-T2 and DS3-T3; meet deliverable via these tasks? Specifications and implementation of construct interfaces and components Done; report needs to be delivered Guidelines for platform dependent deployment of control and data handling software Need to consider exactly what we will do here – this is being done Assessment of readiness for scalability and MDA compliance Done and delivered Recommended guidelines for scalable design and implementation Merge into report with MDA compliance – input from LOFAR experience: on track

Paul Alexander8 DS3 Deliverable Status 4 th SKADS Workshop, Lisbon, 2-3 October 2008 DS3 remains on trackDS3 remains on track DS3-T1: Excellent progress DS3-T2: Work needs to be done drawing in LOFAR experience, but plan is in place for meeting all deliverables DS3-T3: Excellent progress DS3-T4: Completed very successfully DS3-T5: On target schedule – good progress DS3-T6: Small agreed changes in emphasis of deliverables so that they will be met. Conclusions
