 We communicate with others based on the meanings we assign to things around us and the symbols we use to communicate those meanings.  Words and symbols have no meaning other than those we give them.  Base for effective communication: -broad base of knowledge and meaning on a wide range and variety of subjects -knowledge about language Example: Doctor and patient using medical terminology Meaning

 Having a large and flexible vocabulary is important because language… ◦ Is symbolic Meaning of a symbol resides within individuals Example: American flag ◦ Has standards for appropriateness You need different kinds of language and a large collection of word symbols to communicate appropriately in different contexts and situations ◦ Adds interest to communication A large and flexible vocabulary can add interest, originality, vitality, and clarity to communication

Structure -the way the different parts of a language are arranged  Form  formal  informal  alformin???  The way to build words in a language is regulated by the particular code or structure of the language.  Clear and appropriate language structures are important to clear communication
