SOUTHERN ECONOMY -economy was totally destroyed -currency worthless -no transportation system -no gov’t authority -loss of slave labor -growth of gov’t to provide public services

LANDOWNERS -plantation owners hardest hit Slaves gone Crops destroyed Fortunes lost Homes looted -some radicals thought land should be divided to slaves as payment for slavery -but land was never given to slaves

AFTER SLAVERY -many slaves left the plantations -looked for missing family -others simply moved to new areas – went North or West -most did not have the money to buy any land

PLANTATIONS RESTORED -many of the poor could not leave -tenant farming person pays a rent to the landowner -sharecroppers person gives a portion of the harvest to pay for the land -the absent idea of “40 acres and a mule” described a promise many freed slaves believed the U.S. government had made A rumor spread throughout the South that land belonging to plantation owners would be given to former slaves so they could set up their own farms. -cotton is no longer king

FREEDMAN’S BUREAU -created to help former slaves adjust -provided education and schooling -helped former slaves find work -was never able to really help most former slaves -land reform was most basic need of former slaves

Reconstruction -North becomes weary of Reconstruction -Republicans split over Grant scandals Credit Mobilier Whiskey Ring -Panic of 1873 – caused by bad loans given to railroad developers -Radicals have less and less control over South

Compromise of election -Samuel Tilden and Rutherford Hayes run for election -No electoral winner -some southern votes are disputed -Hayes is given all disputed electoral votes -Southern states threaten succession again

Deal is Made -Compromise is made -Republican Hayes wins the election -Northern troops are withdrawn from the south -Reconstruction ends -Home Rule of South reverses many advances

New Rules -Black Codes – laws to limit rights of African Americans -Jim Crow laws -Segregation- all public places -KKK – used violence to keep blacks from voting political economic social -Enforcement Acts- made it against the law to block black voters -Financial Control

Segregation -decline in freedoms -end of Freedmen’s Bureau -end of voting -little money -southern leaders ignored the Constitution and the 14 th & 15 th Amendments

New South -southern economy eventually emerged stronger than before the war -sharecropping replaced slavery -more industry -better transportation -politically, whites were still in control and blacks were denied citizenship -”Solid South” emerged

“Ms. A, clearly, you are finished teaching for the week. What do I do now?” 1.Finish your chart from yesterday and add any economic changes that were made in the South. These don’t necessarily need to be laws like they were yesterday. 2.On the back of you bubble map, create a chart that lists the successes and failure of Reconstruction 3.Turn this in when you are finished, you have 20 minutes to complete this assignment. 4.Turn to the side board and take note of the important dates and reading assignments. We will take notes next week on only Wednesday and Thursday.
