How do earthquakes occur?  When underground rock suddenly breaks along a fault.  The sudden release of energy causes the ground to shake.

How to protect yourself from earthquakes? Go under a sturdy object or furniture.Go next to an interior wall.Keep head down and hands cover neck.

How do floods occur?  When water overflows at land that is usually dry.  They take hours and even days to build up.  A broken dam, ice melting quickly, or even excessive rain.

How to protect yourself from floods? Go to a higher point such as a roof. Avoid areas that are subject to flood.

How do hurricanes occur?  They become tropical disturbances in warm ocean waters.  They occur from tropical storms.  When the wind speed increases to 74mph.

How to protect yourself from hurricanes? Stay away from windows. Pay attention to weather reports. Stay indoors and turn off electricity if instructed.

How do tornadoes occur?  Wind shears make the air rotate.  Funnel cloud is created by faster spinning.  The funnel rotates then touches down.

How to protect yourself from tornadoes? Stay away from ALL windows. The basement is the safest place in a building. Hide under a sturdy piece of furniture or table.

How do tsunamis occur?  Sudden rock movements in an ocean.  Such as earthquakes, landslides, or volcanic eruptions.

How to protect yourself from tsunamis? First protect yourself from the earthquake. Second gather members of your household. Third move to higher ground and away from the coast.

How do wildfires occur?  9 out of 10 caused by people.  1 out of 10 caused by lightning strike.  People leave cigarette butts or ranging machinery sparks.

How to protect yourself from wildfires? Remove natural fuels around your home such as dry leaves. Mark water sources so firefighters can access them easily. Enclose the under of your house so fire doesn’t creep under.
