Inspiration (Historical Context) The game series that is Fallout, had many inspirations but not just from the obvious wars and events that had happened which may of made people more conscious of the possible future to our world that is presented in the Fallout universe. Fallout has had inspiration from all over including from some hit movies/ series such as: Mad Max, which is set in the distant future, where the world is a wasteland and civilization has collapsed. Wasteland, the biggest inspiration being this game, also being set in the far future, following the devastation of a global nuclear war in 1998 Radioactive Dreams, the infamous post-apocalyptic musical and detective movie. Also following the theme of following a nuclear war. All the inspiration from movies and video games for the Fallout game series are all linked by the theme of being post-apocalyptic/ following a nuclear war which is also one of the main aspects of the game. Past Events That May Have Influenced The Franchise Well, the Fallout universe is set in an alternate history scenario that came from our reality following World War II so obviously the Fallout franchise is heavily based off of a past event such as World War II which was ended by nuclear warfare. Nuclear warfare scared a lot of people so it probably influenced the creation of this game as most games from the franchise you start in a bunker protected from the effects of nuclear warfare, whilst your character leaves a lot of characters (NPCs) stay hidden in the bunker continuing to be scared of the wasteland (The aftermath of nuclear warfare) and the possible continuation of nuclear warfare. The most influential past events would be the nuclear bombs, codenamed ‘Fat Man’ and ‘Little Boy’ that were dropped onto the Japanese cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which over 200,000 people were killed and this is why people feared the possibility of the use of atomic bombs so much, therefore gave Tim Cain the idea to start the Fallout franchise, not expecting it to become such a hit. Formula Of The Fallout Franchise All of the games in the Fallout franchise follows the theme of being futuristic, post-apocalyptic and all whilst having a 1950s style/vibe, which includes setting, apparel and especially music. Most Fallout games start the same way inside a vault, with some exceptions however all games in the franchise follow the same plot of surviving through a nuclear war and starting the game wearing a vault-tec jumpsuit. Part of the formula the games in the franchise are always choice driven, they were one of the first game franchises to ever do this and your choices throughout the games have a great impact on almost everything in the game. An example of this would be in the first Fallout game, when in search of water for your vault you have a choice to tell people of your vaults location to aid your vault but this also has a consequence that if you do so later in the game your vault will be attacked. The Fallout Brand Before being owned by Bethesda studios and having a completely different style and of course brand, the franchise was owned by the two studios, Interplay and Black Isle Studios. These two companies owned the franchise before the game Fallout 3 was finished and created the games:  Fallout  Fallout 2  Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood Of Steel  Fallout: Brotherhood Of Steel Once Bethesda took the franchise off their hands and finished creating Fallout 3 with their own take on it, the franchise became more popular because of the new game style and the Bethesda brand which was also behind the hit franchise ‘The Elder Scrolls’.
