 Health- the combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being. › Gives you the knowledge and skills you need to take care of your health for a lifetime.  Three main areas of health: › Physical › Mental/Emotional › Social Health Physical SocialMental/Emotional Health Triangle

 All about how your body functions.  Having enough energy to perform your daily activities.  5 important actions you can take: 1. Get 8-10 hours of sleep 2. Drink 8 cups of water each day 3. Engage in 30-60min of P.E 4. Avoid tobacco, alcohol, drugs 5. Bathe, Brush teeth & floss daily

 All about your feelings and thoughts.  How you feel about yourself & How you cope with problems that occur in your life. 1. Enjoy Challenges 2. Accept responsibility for your actions. 3. Control of your life 4. Express emotions in appropriate ways 5. Has a positive outlook on life.

 Deep-seated sense of meaning and purpose in life.  This does not mean that you belong to a religious group.

 Getting along with others.  Social network includes your family, friends, teachers, and other members of your community. › Seeking and lending support when needed › Communicating clearly and listening to others. › Showing respect and care for yourself and others.

 When your health triangle is balanced, you have a high degree of wellness.  Wellness: overall state of well-being or total health  Ignoring any part of your health triangle affects your total health.

What are the three parts of the health triangle?

 This exercise is designed to help you learn more about healthful behaviors and to get to know your classmates at the same time.  DIRECTIONS: Obtain a signature for each behavior described on the paper.  You must have a different signature for each behavior.  You cannot have your own or Ms. Leslie’s.  First one complete and handed into Ms. Leslie WINS

 Your heredity influences your health. Ask your parent or grandparent questions about what health conditions and diseases run in your family. Heredity is All the traits that were biologically passed on to you from your parents

 Your environment includes The physical places in which you live. The people who make up your world. The culture you live in. Your environment is The sum of your surroundings

Your attitude is the way you view situations. It can have a big effect on your health. Optimists are usually in better health than pessimists.

 You have total control over your own behaviors.  You can choose to avoid high-risk behaviors in favor of healthful behaviors, like choosing low-fat, nutritious foods and participating in daily physical activity.

 The constant presence of media messages has a significant influence on your decisions. Media is The various methods for communicating information

 Media content is delivered via technology and through print media, like newspapers and magazines. Technology : Radio, television, and the Internet

Risk behaviors can harm your health, but there are steps you can take to avoid or reduce these risks.

 You can control most risk behaviors. Avoiding risks will help you to protect and promote your health. Risk behaviors Actions that can potentially threaten your health or the health of others

 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified six of the most significant risk behaviors for young people under age Tobacco Use 2. Unhealthy Diet. 3. Lack of physical activity 4. Alcohol & Drugs 5. Sexual Behaviors 6. Injuries & Violence

 When you repeatedly engage in certain risk behaviors you expose yourself to the effects of cumulative risks. Cumulative risks Related risks that increase in effect with each added risk

 Another way to reduce health risks is through prevention. Taking steps to keep something from happening or getting worse

 One of the most effective strategies for protecting your health is practicing abstinence. Abstinence is A deliberate decision to avoid high-risk behaviors, including sexual activity and the use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs

 Scientists have found that positive lifestyle factors improve people’s overall health, happiness, and longevity. Lifestyle factors are The personal habits or behaviors related to the way a person lives

Define the following: Advocacy, Refusal Skills, Conflict resolution, health skills, interpersonal communication, values, health-consumer, goals, decision- making skills, health fraud, action plan, warranty, and health consumer.

 What are some skills you use to maintain your health?

 As a class read Ch. 2 Lesson 1.  Students will work in small groups: Students will write a persuasive paragraph that encourages other teens to practice a specific health skill. Students should explain the benefit of practicing the health skill.

 What are some health- related decisions that teens face on a daily basis?

 Make sure you have all vocabulary from Chapters 1 & 2.  Complete Chapter 2: Lessons 2-4 Lesson Assessments.  Answer questions 1-3. You can write the questions and answers or rewrite the questions into the answers.  Edmodo Assignment for homework

 Read the information on page 50 about resolving consumer problems. Make a list of the steps they would take if you purchased a product that broke the first time it was used.  Create an Edmodo account and answer the question above on Edmodo.  Edmodo directions:  Select I’m a Student button Enter 6-digit group code  Fill out registration form with the group code, username and password Click Sign-up

 Give you 15 minutes to get everything together.  We will REVIEW for EXTRA Credit!  Open Note Test. You will need Chapter 1 notes and vocabulary. Along with Chapter 2 Voc and worksheet from yesterday.  You may use pen or pencil.  You will receive a test and answer sheet.  Title the test Ch. 1 & 2 Test  Absolutely No talking until the LAST test is turned in. If you talk, you will receive a zero.  36 questions. Multiple Choice, T/F, Matching.  Write one learning Target for extra credit.  When you finish, complete Ch. 10 Vocabulary.  Vocabulary starts on page 254. There are 21 words.
