The Highlights in the life of Madam C.J. Walker By Shonet Short

. Introduction This is a tutorial highlighting specific contributions of Madam C. J. Walker. I enjoyed creating this because when I grow up I would like to become a beautician. I wanted to know what did Madam C. J. Walker create and accomplish that made her so well known and reputable. As you go through the tutorial I hope that you find the information to be beneficial.

Let us begin …..

Madam C. J. Walker or her real name Sarah Breedlove was born in Delta, Louisiana on December 23, She grew up on a plantation with her siblings and parents. At a young age her parents died. Sarah then decided to leave Delta with her younger sister to find work due to yellow fever outbreaks.

Madam Walker was an entrepreneur. In1906 she began touring the country to promote her products. Some of her products included shampoos, therapeutic sulfur treatments and her “Madam Walker’s Wonderful Hair Grower” which had a straightening effect for African American hair.

In Madam Walker operated a beauty school. Here she trained and educated African American women on how to care for their hair as well as becoming door to sales women for her products.

In 1910 she moved her ever expanding business to Indianapolis where the head quarters were established. Here she was able to manufacture and distribute her products.

Madam Walker was also a civil rights activist. In 1918 she was the keynote speaker for the NAACP anti-lynching campaign. She also donated generous amounts of money to the YWCA and YMCA organizations.

To recap…. Dec 23, Sarah Breedlove Toured country operated beauty moved to keynote speaker was born promoting products school Indianapolis for NAACP started mass production I I I I I

Madam Walker died May 25, 1919 at the age of 51. She made many accomplishments throughout her lifetime. She contributed significantly to African American heritage and national liberty.

If Madam Walker had not made the contributions that she did society would be different in at least three ways. First, if she had not become an entrepreneur it would not have laid a previous example for future generations to follow. Madam Walker exemplified a blue print for success despite adversity. Secondly her becoming a civil rights activist greatly impacted the society. If she had not, the charities including YWCA, YMCA, and others may not have been able to be as effective without her physical and monetary support. Lastly, her innovations in the hair care industry. If she had not been and extraordinary example and model, those that followed would not have any guides or precedents to build upon.
